Chapter 2 - The Midnight Shift

By two o'clock in the morning, The Brass Elm was completely silent, shrouded in the heavy shadows of the closed dining room.

The last of the VIP guests had departed in their town cars, leaving behind half-eaten beef Wellington and spilled pinot noir. I stayed behind to help the dishwashers clear the private upper mezzanine, clutching a small leather notebook inside my apron pocket.

The heavy mahogany double doors creaked open, and heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the hardwood floorboards.

I turned around, nearly dropping a tray of champagne flutes as Damian Cross walked into the dim dining area.

He had taken off his tuxedo jacket, draping it over one arm, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to expose corded forearms and a dark watch. He looked exhausted, the lines around his gray eyes carved deep with an old, enduring sorrow that even billions of dollars could never erase.

"You're working late again, Maya," Damian said softly, pulling out a wooden chair and turning it around to sit down.

"Don't you have a pharmacology exam on Thursday morning?"

The fact that he remembered my schedule sent an ache through my chest that made my throat tight.

"It's tomorrow at eight, Mr. Cross," I said, wiping down the edge of the nearest table with a clean cloth. "I do my best memorization on the night train anyway."

He smiled faintly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a silver clip holding a fold of crisp hundred-dollar bills.

He laid three of them on the table between us, pushing them toward my rag with his index finger. "For your textbooks. Don't argue with me. Elena used to study at kitchen counters until four in the morning when she was finishing her residency."

Hearing him say his late wife's name broke something fragile inside me.

"Mr. Cross," I began, my voice hesitating on the edge of the precipice. "Can I ask you something personal?"

Damian raised his eyebrows, leaning his chin against his knuckles.

"You're the only person in this building who doesn't look at me like I'm about to order an execution, Maya. Ask."

"Are you happy?"

The question hung in the quiet room between the polished tables and the faint smell of lilies.

Damian looked down at his wedding finger, where a faint white indentation still marked the years he had worn Elena's ring. A complicated shadow crossed his chiseled face—longing, guilt, and a desperate, desperate hope.

"I thought my life ended six years ago in that clinic room, Maya," he said, his voice dropping to a low, rough baritone.

"When Vivian showed me that first ultrasound picture with the heartbeat, it felt like God was giving me a second chance to be a man instead of a weapon. I have to protect this family."

Every instinct in my body screamed at me to tell him right there in the dark.

I wanted to tell him that the heartbeat was a downloaded digital audio file, that the ultrasound was purchased from a medical black market, and that the woman he was trying to protect was measuring him for a coffin.

"Just... be careful, Mr. Cross," I whispered, pulling my hands into my apron.

"Not everything that looks like a miracle is built on solid ground."

Damian studied my face for a long, quiet moment, his gray eyes narrowing slightly with the razor-sharp perception that had kept him alive in the underworld for twenty years.

Before he could answer, the front door buzzer chimed, and his personal security chief, Roman, stepped inside holding an umbrella.

"The car is waiting, boss," Roman announced. "Miss Shaw called from the penthouse; she says the baby is kicking and she can't sleep without you."

Damian stood up, the softness vanishing from his features as he slipped his heavy jacket back over his broad shoulders.

"Get home safe, Maya," he said quietly, nodding to me before following his guard out into the cold drizzle.

I looked at the three hundred-dollar bills on the table and felt a cold resolve settle into my spine.

I was going to save this man’s life, even if I had to tear this city apart to find the truth.
