Chapter 6 - The Foundation Cracks

Monday morning arrived with a blinding, frigid blue sky.

Inside the opulent private dining salon of the Marlowe Hotel, crystal chandeliers cast shimmering facets of light across a table set for twenty. Huge bouquets of white calla lilies stood in silver vases.

Tessa Holloway—or as her customized brass place cards proclaimed, Tessa Vance-Holloway, CEO of Veritas Strategies—stood near the head of the table, radiating triumph.

She wore a crisp, tailored cream-colored pantsuit that screamed old money and executive dominance. Her diamond earrings sparkled under the chandelier. Her left hand was bare, free from any band, manicured to perfection.

Around her, eight of her closest colleagues and social-climbing friends were already sipping vintage Dom Pérignon. Rachel Donovan was there, practically vibrating with excitement as she filmed an Instagram story highlighting the lavish setup.

""Tessa, darling, this is unbelievable,"" Rachel gushed, angling her smartphone. ""Partnering with Vance Capital before thirty-five? You are officially the queen of the Twin Cities startup scene!""

Tessa offered a practiced, gracious laugh, brushing an imaginary strand of hair from her forehead. ""Success isn't an accident, Rachel. You have to be willing to cut dead weight out of your life if you want to fly.""

A quiet murmur of agreement rippled through her sycophantic circle.

""Speaking of dead weight,"" another associate whispered, leaning in, ""did you finally get rid of that boring husband? The one who spent weekends scraping paint off old porches?""

Tessa’s lips curled into a cold, dismissing smirk. ""My legal team served him with formal separation papers this morning. He was an anchor. Some men are built to stay in the basement; some women are built for the penthouse.""

At precisely 12:05 PM, the heavy mahogany double doors of the private dining room swung open.

Julian Vance walked in, flanked by Arthur Bennett and two senior managing partners from Vance Capital. Julian looked imposing in a navy three-piece suit, his face an unreadable mask of corporate authority.

Tessa’s face lit up with intoxicating victory. She smoothed her cream lapels and walked forward, extending her hand with practiced elegance.

""Julian,"" she purred, her voice dripping with polished charm. ""Welcome. I hope the traffic from downtown wasn't too dreadful. We have the private sommelier ready, and my team has reviewed the term sheet.""

Julian did not take her hand. He kept his fingers resting casually in his trouser pockets, staring at her with cold, clinical detachment.

Tessa’s hand lingered in the empty air for a fraction of a second before she lowered it, a slight flicker of unease darting through her eyes. ""Julian? Is everything alright?""

""Everything is proceeding precisely according to schedule, Tessa,"" Julian said evenly.

""Wonderful!"" Tessa forced a bright laugh, turning back toward her admiring guests. ""Well, shall we get to the signing before lunch? I know the Vance board has an exceptionally tight schedule.""

""We do,"" Julian agreed. ""But before we sign, we invited the principal guarantor of your enterprise to join us. After all, Vance Capital never closes a six-figure venture without the primary asset holder present.""

Tessa froze. The bright, confident smile on her face seemed to petrify like wet plaster hardening in the sun. ""Guarantor? Julian, what are you talking about? Veritas Holdings is entirely my sole proprietorship. I told you, I hold all the proprietary licenses.""

""Not according to the documentation you submitted to our compliance department on the fourteenth,"" Arthur Bennett spoke up, his dry, raspy voice cutting through the festive atmosphere like a rusty scalpel.

The mahogany doors opened once more.

The entire dining room turned.

Walking through the doorway, looking impeccably tailored in a bespoke charcoal suit he hadn't worn since his last civic award ceremony, was Grant Holloway.

Beside him walked two uniformed officers from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by an investigator wearing a badge marked Federal Bureau of Investigation: Financial Crimes Task Force.

The room dropped into absolute, suffocating silence.

Rachel Donovan’s smartphone slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the carpet.

Tessa’s mouth opened, but for five long seconds, no sound came out. The blood evacuated from her cheeks so completely that her expensive cream pantsuit suddenly looked darker than her skin.

""Grant?"" she whispered, her voice cracking down the middle.

May you like

Grant walked slowly up the center runner of the dining salon, stopping precisely four feet from her, his expression as steady and immovable as granite.

""Good afternoon, Tessa,"" Grant said. ""I believe you scheduled a closing.""
