Chapter 3 - The Clinic at Dawn

Lauren’s coffee mug slipped from her fingers. It hit the edge of the kitchen island, bounced, and shattered against the slate floor, splattering cold water and ceramic shards across her bare feet. She didn't flinch. She didn't look down at the mess. Her wide, terrified eyes were locked entirely on Rachel.

""What are you doing here?"" Lauren's voice was a ragged croak. ""Get out of my house.""

""Your house?"" Rachel let out a harsh, barking laugh that bounced off the kitchen cabinets. ""Funny. Marcus used to joke about how nice your house was whenever you two shared room service at the Westin on your company credit cards. You seemed perfectly happy sharing things with my family. Why the sudden territorial urge?""

""Evan,"" Lauren turned toward me, her hands reaching out, trembling violently. ""Evan, please. Let me explain. She’s insane, she’s—""

""Don't touch me, Lauren,"" I said.

My voice was dead. Not angry, not screaming. Just flat. A barren landscape.

Lauren stopped dead in her tracks, her hand hovering in the empty air between us. The sight of her—disheveled, panicked, caught entirely without her corporate polish or prepared defenses—sickened me far more than any rage could have.

""I read your phone yesterday afternoon,"" I said, looking straight into her eyes. ""Before you even came out of the shower. I saw what 'Megan R' was telling you. I know about the hotel rooms. I know about the Denver team that didn't exist. And I know what you tested positive for.""

Lauren put both hands over her mouth. A ragged, animal whimper escaped her throat. She sank down against the frame of the pantry, sliding to the floor regardless of the broken mug pieces nearby.

""I'm sorry,"" she wept, rocking slightly. ""Evan, I'm so sorry. It was a mistake. It was just a stupid, lonely mistake. It didn't mean anything. I was going to tell you—I was trying to figure out how to tell you—""

""You weren't going to tell him anything,"" Rachel interrupted, stepping forward, her eyes flashing with cold, clinical fury. ""You were going to let him sleep with you again, wait until he developed symptoms, and then pretend some random bug was circulating around his office. You were going to gaslight your husband to protect your vice president title.""

Rachel pulled a second document from her folder and tossed it onto the counter. It was a printed spreadsheet of Marcus's corporate card expenses.

""Marcus is currently packing his bags under the supervision of my brother,"" Rachel said, turning back to me. ""My attorney has already drafted the emergency divorce filing and an injunction on our joint accounts. I’m naming your wife in the civil discovery for intentional infliction of emotional distress and reckless endangerment. If you have any sense, Evan, you’ll get yourself an attorney and a doctor before noon.""

Rachel picked up her sunglasses, slid them over her swollen eyes, and picked up her purse. She didn't look at Lauren on the floor again. She paused beside me at the edge of the kitchen.

""I’m sorry you had to find out like this,"" Rachel murmured quietly. ""None of us deserved this dirt.""

She walked down the hallway. The front door opened, clicked firmly shut, and the silence that settled over our house was heavier than lead.

On the floor, Lauren was weeping hysterically, her head pressed against her knees. ""Evan... Evan, please look at me. We can fix this. Couples survive this. We can go to counseling. I love you. I swear to God I love you.""

I looked down at her. Twelve years of devotion, of building a life, of supporting her through every promotion, every late night, every stressful quarter. It was all gone. Wiped clean like chalk from a slate.

""I have an appointment at the lab in twenty minutes,"" I said quietly, stepping around the broken glass on the floor.

""Don't leave,"" she begged, reaching for my pant leg. ""Please don't leave me alone.""

""I am going to get tested for the infections you brought into our home,"" I told her, my voice cutting through her sobs with icy precision. ""When I get back, I want your things in suitcases. If you are still inside this house by noon, I am calling the police and having you removed for trespassing.""

I grabbed my car keys from the bowl and walked out, leaving the front door wide open behind me to let out the air she breathed.
