Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Execution

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Falcon Freight tower overlooked the Philadelphia skyline. The room was enclosed in soundproof glass, centered around a twenty-foot mahogany conference table.
Ethan sat at the head of the table, his tie loosened, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night of frantic calls to his attorneys. Every lawyer he contacted had given him the same chilling response: the evidence against him was insurmountable. The forged signatures were verified by forensic experts. The security footage of him dumping Claire’s phone into a dumpster behind a diner on Route 17 had been recovered.
Beside him, Victoria was chewing her fingernails, trembling. ""Ethan, we just need to settle. Offer her fifty percent. Offer her the penthouse!""
""Shut up!"" Ethan snarled, his composure completely shattered. ""She doesn't own Falcon Freight yet! The syndicate has to approve the takeover vote, and I still control forty-nine percent of the voting shares!""
The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Arthur Bennett walked in first, followed by a team of six senior corporate attorneys. Behind them walked Claire, wearing a bespoke ivory pantsuit, walking with effortless posture, her silver-capped cane clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
She did not sit in an ordinary guest seat. She walked directly to the opposite end of the table and took the executive chairman’s high-backed leather chair.
""Good morning, Ethan,"" Claire said smoothly, opening a sleek leather binder. ""Let's dispense with the pleasantries. At eight o'clock this morning, Vanguard Meridian Partners officially called in your thirty-five million dollar loan due to catastrophic breach of covenant.""
Ethan slammed his fist onto the table, standing up. ""You can't do that! The loan terms gave me a ninety-day grace period for debt service!""
""The loan terms gave you a grace period provided there was no material fraud in the collateral,"" Claire replied, her voice razor-sharp. ""You pledged my private trust as collateral using a forged power of attorney. That constitutes criminal fraud under federal banking statutes, which automatically nullifies your grace period and triggers immediate asset seizure.""
Arthur Bennett leaned forward, tossing a thick dossier across the polished table. It slid to a halt right in front of Ethan. ""Furthermore, as of seven-thirty this morning, Bennett Global Logistics terminated all three master transportation contracts with Falcon Freight. Without those contracts, Falcon Freight's quarterly revenue drops by seventy-two percent. The company is effectively insolvent.""
Ethan stared at the documents, his vision blurring. ""You... you destroyed your own investment just to spite me?""
""No,"" Claire said with a serene smile. ""I bought Falcon Freight’s distressed debt for pennies on the dollar through Vanguard Meridian. I didn't destroy anything. I restructured it. I now own eighty-two percent of the company's debt and equity. You, Ethan, own nothing. In fact, after the asset liquidation, your personal liability to my firm stands at fourteen million dollars.""
Victoria gasped, jumping out of her chair. ""Fourteen million? Ethan, you told me we were protected by limited liability!""
""He lied to you, Victoria,"" Claire said calmly, turning her cool gaze to the mistress. ""Ethan personally guaranteed the mezzanine financing. Every asset he owns—his cars, his offshore accounts, his luxury watches, and that four-carat diamond ring on your finger—belongs to the bankruptcy estate. Speaking of the ring, Marcus?""
Marcus stepped forward with two uniformed police officers. One of the officers stepped behind Victoria. ""Victoria Sterling, you are in possession of stolen property reported by the Bennett estate. Remove the ring, please.""
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears of humiliation. She ripped the diamond ring off her finger, threw it violently onto the conference table, and turned on Ethan like a viper. ""You pathetic loser! You told me you had everything under control! You told me she was helpless!""
She grabbed her designer purse and stormed out of the boardroom, leaving Ethan completely alone in the center of the wreckage he had created.
Ethan sank back into his chair, his head in his hands, trembling violently. ""Claire... please. We were married for eleven years. You can't do this to me. I made a terrible mistake. I was exhausted! The caregiving... the stress... I lost my mind!""
Claire stood up slowly. She walked down the length of the long table until she stood towering over him. She leaned down, resting both hands on her silver cane, her eyes locking onto his terrified face.
May you like
""You didn't crack under stress, Ethan. You revealed who you truly were. You thought my strength lived in my legs. You thought that because I couldn't walk, I couldn't fight. You forgot who built your career. You forgot who wrote your business plans. You discarded me like trash on the side of the road because you thought I was broken.""
She straightened up and looked at the waiting detectives at the door. ""Take him out of my sight.""
