Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Secret

While the moving crew supervised Ryan loading up a rented truck under the watchful eye of the police, Arthur Vance arrived in his sedan. He walked past the screaming relatives with the calm indifference of a seasoned litigator, handing me a thick manila folder.

"Margaret, take a look at this before they drive away," Arthur whispered, pulling me into the empty foyer of the home.

I opened the folder. Inside were bank statements, wire transfers, and loan applications dating back eighteen months. My eyes scanned the documents, widening with every page.

Ryan hadn't lost his money in a tech crash. He had embezzled over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars from his previous business partners to fund high-stakes sports gambling across several offshore accounts. Worse yet, he had attempted to forge my signature on a home equity line of credit against Elm Street just four months ago—an application Arthur’s firm had flagged and quietly blocked without alerting Ryan.

"He was planning to bleed the equity out of this property to pay off his bookies," Arthur murmured. "That’s why he wanted his mother here permanently. He was preparing to file for conservatorship over you, claiming your age and 'declining mental faculties' made you unfit to manage the estate. That dinner stunt? It was a test run to break your spirit and establish dominance in front of witnesses."

A cold shudder ran through my core. The disrespect at Christmas dinner wasn't just petty narcissism; it was the opening salvo of a hostile takeover. He had wanted me to react, to scream, to appear unstable in front of his family so he could begin laying the groundwork with local doctors.

I walked back out onto the porch, clutching the folder firmly against my chest. Ryan was strapping a mattress to the back of the U-Haul, wiping sweat from his forehead despite the freezing wind.

"Ryan," I called out.

He turned, wiping his brow with the back of his dirty glove. "What now, Margaret? Want to charge us for the snow we’re tracking on your precious driveway?"

I held up the financial file. "Second National Bank. Account ending in 4109. And the signature card you forged in August."

Ryan’s face instantly drained of all color. His hands began to shake as he let go of the tie-down strap, the heavy cord snapping back and striking the metal truck bed with a loud crack.

"Where... where did you get that?" he stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the police officer standing twenty feet away.

"Arthur has friends in commercial fraud," I said softly. "I have two choices right now, Ryan. I can hand this file to Officer Davis and have you in handcuffs before you exit the subdivision, or I can let you drive that truck out of my driveway."
