Chapter 4 - The Family Dinner Ambush

The news of Dana’s suspension hit our family like a bomb. By Wednesday afternoon, my phone had accumulated over forty voicemails from extended relatives who hadn’t spoken to me in years. But none of them mattered compared to the summons from my parents.

My father had called Ryan directly. “Come to the house for dinner tonight,” he had said, his tone exhausted. “We need to settle this before it destroys everything.”

When Ryan and I pulled into the driveway of my childhood home, Dana’s red sedan was already parked by the garage. I turned off the engine and sat in the quiet car, looking at the familiar porch lights.

“You don’t have to do this if you’re not ready,” Ryan said gently, reaching across the console to touch my cheek.

“No,” I replied. “If I don't face her now, she’ll spend the rest of her life playing the victim to everyone who will listen. Let’s get this over with.”

The moment we walked through the front door, the tension inside the house was suffocating. My mother was standing by the stove, stirring a pot of soup with mechanical rigidity. My father sat at the head of the dining table, his reading glasses dangling from one ear. Dana sat at the far end, wearing a drab oversized sweater, her eyes red-rimmed and puffy, clutching a soggy wad of tissues.

“Claire,” my mother gasped, wiping her hands on her apron. “Thank God you came. Please, sit down.”

Neither Ryan nor I sat. We stood near the doorway, keeping our coats on.

“I’m not here for dinner, Mom,” I said evenly. “Why did you ask us over?”

Dana threw her head back and let out a dramatic sob. “Why do you think, Claire? You ruined my life! They fired me! They marched me out of the building with two armed security guards like I was a common criminal! Do you have any idea what that felt like?”

“You are a criminal, Dana,” Ryan stated, crossing his arms. “You committed a federal crime when you accessed Claire’s confidential medical records without consent and weaponized them in public.”

“I was looking out for you!” Dana shrieked, slamming her fists onto the table. “You were marrying my sister! She was lying to you! She was hiding the fact that her body is broken, and I wanted to make sure you weren’t trapped in a childless marriage!”

“Stop lying!” Ryan’s voice cut through the room like thunder, causing my mother to jump and drop her wooden spoon. “Claire never lied to me! I was the one holding the water cup when she woke up from that surgery! I was the one who drove her to every single appointment at Harbor! I knew every detail of her medical condition before I even bought the ring! You didn’t uncover a secret, Dana—you exposed your own sick, twisted cruelty!”

Dana froze, her mouth hanging open. She looked desperately toward my parents. “Dad! Did you hear how he talks to me? Tell them! Tell Claire she has to drop the charges!”

My father took off his glasses and set them deliberately on the table. He didn't look at Dana; he looked down at his own calloused hands. “Dana, be quiet.”

“Dad—”

“I said be quiet!” my father barked, his voice trembling with an authority I hadn’t heard since I was a teenager. He looked up, his eyes bloodshot with grief. “Your mother and I watched you humiliate your sister in front of five hundred people. We watched you laugh while you tore her heart out on her wedding day. And now you sit here telling us you did it out of concern?”

May you like

“Dad, they’re going to take my certification!” Dana wept hysterically. “I can never work in healthcare again! I won’t be able to pay my rent! I could go to jail!”

“Then you shouldn't have broken the law,” my father said, his voice hollow. “You made your bed, Dana. You brought this disgrace upon yourself.”
