Chapter 6 - Cornered In Lake Forest

The penthouse felt like a gilded cage on the edge of the world. While the city below was swallowed by the storm, the three of us stood in the vast, open-concept living room, separated by five years of silence, lies, and calculated cruelty.
Vincent locked the biometric security panels on the terrace doors, his shoulders tense as he finally turned to face me. ""Tell her, Sophia. Tell her the truth before she destroys every single thing we spent years protecting.""
Sophia pulled her cardigan tighter around her slender frame, her gaze dropping to the hardwood floor in shame. ""Claire... Oliver is not Vincent’s son.""
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that echoed off the high glass ceilings. ""Do you think I'm a fool? I held the genetic test in my hands, Sophia. I saw the sealed laboratory results from Northwestern Memorial Hospital with Vincent’s signature on the custody agreement.""
""It's a fake,"" Vincent interrupted, his voice hollow, stepping between us. ""I paid the director of that lab two hundred thousand dollars to forge those results and register Oliver under my name.""
I froze, staring at him in disbelief. ""Why would any man forge a paternity test to claim a child that isn't his?""
""Because Oliver is my brother's son,"" Vincent confessed, the words dropping like lead weights into the silence. ""Leo's child.""
The room went completely still. Leo Moretti. Vincent’s younger brother, who had died six years ago in an alleged boating accident off the coast of Lake Michigan—an accident that everyone in high society whispered had been an assassination orchestrated by rival dock syndicates.
""Leo was married to Sophia in secret,"" Vincent explained, his voice thick with a grief he had buried beneath ice for half a decade. ""When Patrick Miller found out that Sophia was carrying a Moretti heir, he threatened to kill them both to wipe out the bloodline claim on the southern ports. When Leo’s boat was sabotaged, I made a promise over my brother’s grave. I would protect Sophia, and I would claim the boy as my own so Miller wouldn't dare touch them without triggering a full-scale corporate and gang war.""
I listened, the puzzle pieces clicking into place with horrifying clarity. But instead of softening my anger, it ignited an inferno.
""And what was I, Vincent?"" I stepped toward him, my voice rising with every word, tears of pure rage finally spilling over my eyelashes. ""What was I in this noble little tragedy of yours? You made me your wife! You let me beg you for a crumb of affection! When my mother died, you couldn't spare ten minutes to hold my hand because you were too busy playing guardian angel to your brother's mistress!""
""I couldn't let anyone know!"" Vincent shouted back, his composure finally shattering into raw agony. ""Miller had eyes on everything I did! If I showed you affection, if I let the world see that I loved you, you would have become the primary target! I had to make everyone believe our marriage was purely transactional, a cold business merger that meant nothing to me!""
May you like
I stopped breathing. The air in the room felt heavy, suffocating.
""You loved me?"" I whispered, my voice dripping with scorn. ""You don't protect someone by starving them to death, Vincent. You didn't save me from the fire. You made me live inside it.""
