Chapter 7 - A Splash of Cold Truth in Broad Daylight

The three seconds that followed were the quietest moments of my entire life.
Margaret stretched her feet further across the sofa, an ugly, triumphant sneer curling her lips as she prepared to watch me drop to my knees before her. Vanessa raised her phone, clearly aiming the camera to capture my ultimate humiliation for her private group chats. Richard took another slow sip of my father’s champagne, his eyes heavy with drunken satisfaction.
""Go on, then,"" Margaret demanded, snapping her fingers like she was commanding a golden retriever. ""Get down on the floor and scrub, you little—""
The water left the basin in a single, massive, shimmering arc.
It struck Margaret Whitmore with the force of a tidal wave. The freezing torrent hit her square between the eyes, plastering her expensive salon-curled hair across her face, drenching her designer ivory suit until the silk turned translucent, and knocking her backward into the cushions with a violent gasp.
""AGGGHHH! GOD ALMIGHTY!"" Margaret shrieked, flailing her arms like a drowning pelican, coughing and spitting out mouthfuls of freezing water.
The crystal glass slipped from Vanessa’s fingers, shattering into a hundred glittering shards across the Persian rug. ""MOTHER!"" she screamed, leaping to her feet as the water splashed across her designer leather pumps.
Richard choked on his champagne, spraying the golden liquid across the coffee table as he staggered out of his chair, his eyes bulging in utter fury. ""ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR SICK MIND?!""
Daniel looked at me as if the laws of physics had just shattered before his very eyes. The smug, untouchable grin was completely erased from his face, replaced by a grotesque mask of shock and wounded masculine pride.
""GET OUT!"" my voice cut through their panicked screaming like a thunderclap. It was loud, resonant, and carried an authority that made the chandeliers tremble. ""Every single one of you! Pack your garbage and get out of my home before I have you physically thrown into the street!""
Margaret clawed the wet hair out of her eyes, her face bright red beneath her ruined makeup, her chest heaving with hysterical rage. ""You psychotic, ungrateful gutter-rat! How dare you lay a finger on me in my son’s house! Richard! Daniel! Grab her! Throw her out into the rain right now!""
""Your son’s house?"" I laughed aloud—a clear, musical, merciless laugh that stopped Daniel dead in his tracks as he moved to grab my arm. ""Margaret, you ignorant, thieving old woman. Everything you think you took from me was an illusion.""
Margaret wiped water from her chin and burst into a jagged, trembling sneer. ""Your house? Sweetheart, everything you have belongs to the Whitmore family! Daniel signed the consolidation! We own your trusts, we own your land, and we own this very roof! You are nothing but a penniless squatter!""
I smiled. A slow, chilling smile that caused Daniel’s stomach to visibly drop.
""Is that what Daniel told you?"" I asked softly, reaching behind the mahogany console table.
I produced the thick, midnight-blue folder, tossing it onto the wet coffee table right in front of Richard’s face. The heavy thud of the legal dossier silenced the room instantly.
""What is that?"" Daniel asked, his voice cracking, the color draining from his cheeks until he looked like a walking corpse.
""That, Daniel,"" I whispered, stepping directly into his personal space, ""is the master audit of Whitmore Construction, combined with the irrevocable revocation of the power of attorney you thought you tricked me into signing.""
Richard frowned, snatching the wet folder with trembling hands. ""This is nonsense! Bradley Henderson filed the collateral guarantee at nine o'clock this morning! The twenty-eight million has already cleared into our account!""
""Check your banking app, Richard,"" I replied, crossing my arms over my chest. ""Go on. Pull out your phone and look at the operating ledger.""
The grandfather clock in the corner ticked with agonizing slowness as Richard fumbled with his smartphone. Vanessa leaned over his shoulder, her sneer slowly melting into absolute terror as she watched her father’s fingers shake uncontrollably.
""No..."" Richard whispered, his voice dropping into a horrified croak. ""No, no, no... this can't be right.""

""What is it, Dad?!"" Daniel demanded, lunging toward his father. ""What does it say?!""
Richard looked up from the screen, his face completely gray, his eyes wide with the hollow stare of a condemned man. ""The transaction was rejected. The account isn't funded... It’s frozen. All of our accounts are frozen.""
