Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

""Security,"" I called out toward the open door.

Two burly building guards stepped into the room immediately, their hands resting on their utility belts.

""Please escort these two women off the premises,"" I instructed calmly. ""If they ever step foot in this building again, have them arrested for criminal trespass.""

""Kristin, no! You can't do this to your own mother!"" Beverly shrieked, flailing as one of the guards firmly took her by the elbow. The pristine socialite facade had completely vanished, replaced by the hysterical rage of a trapped animal. ""I am your mother! I gave you life! You owe me everything!""

""Get your hands off her!"" Joanna yelled, trying to swat the other guard away. ""Kristin, you bitch! Christian is going to leave me if the ranch goes under! You're destroying my family!""

""You destroyed this family seven years ago when you decided my loyalty was a blank check,"" I said, turning my back to them as the guards escorted them down the hall, their screaming voices echoing through the corporate suite until the elevator doors chimed shut.

Once the office fell quiet, Sarah stepped into the doorway, her eyes wide with shock. ""Are you alright, Kristin?""

""I'm fine, Sarah,"" I replied, taking a slow, steadying breath. ""Please call Maisie’s school and ensure that neither Beverly Vance nor Joanna Vance is permitted within five hundred feet of my daughter. Under no circumstances is anyone to pick Maisie up except for me.""

""Consider it done,"" Sarah nodded and hurried out.

An hour later, my cell phone rang. It was Marcus.

""Kristin, the judge signed the preliminary injunction faster than I anticipated,"" Marcus reported, his tone crackling with professional satisfaction. ""The bank has frozen all accounts associated with the trust, including Beverly's personal accounts and the Cayman entity. But that's not all. Our forensic accountant discovered something else while combing through the transaction logs from the last forty-eight hours.""

""What did they find?""

""Beverly knew the walls were closing in even before the incident with Maisie yesterday,"" Marcus revealed. ""Three days ago, Arthur Pendelton received a formal subpoena from the state revenue department regarding irregular trust distributions. Beverly was desperately trying to liquidate one of your father’s commercial strip centers in Tempe for seventy cents on the dollar to pay off the equestrian ranch loan and stash the rest in an untraceable offshore trust before you found out.""

A cold shudder ran down my spine. ""She was trying to sell my father's legacy behind my back.""

""Yes. But to execute the quick sale, she needed absolute legal leverage. If you caught wind of it and intervened, she was preparing to claim you were an unfit mother, using an orchestrated police report regarding Maisie's 'violent tendencies' to threaten you with a public custody scandal.""

My blood turned to ice.

The pieces fell into an even darker, more sinister alignment. The call to 911 wasn't just a moment of petty cruelty or warped grandmotherly discipline. It was a calculated setup. Beverly had deliberately provoked Maisie, engineered the altercation over the doll, and called the police so she would have an official incident report on file to blackmail me if I ever questioned her financial maneuvers.

""She wanted to use my own child as leverage to rob me blind,"" I whispered, the words tasting like poison.

""She miscalculated,"" Marcus said firmly. ""The police officers’ body camera footage has already been subpoenaed. Officer Ramirez and Officer Collins explicitly noted in their supplementary logs that Beverly attempted to manufacture an emergency where none existed. That bodycam footage will destroy any credibility she has left in court.""

""Push for the full forensic audit, Marcus,"" I said, a stone-cold resolve gripping my chest. ""Every penny, every transfer, every forged signature. I want the entire paper trail prepared for the district attorney's office.""

""Understood,"" Marcus replied. ""Kristin... she's going to face criminal prison time for this.""

""She made her bed,"" I said. ""Now she can sleep in it.""
