Chapter 6 - When Her Secret Partner Folded

The boardroom descended into total chaos. Greg stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floorboards. ""Robert, you can't do this! I built this firm! My name is on the front entrance!""
""Your name is on a fraudulent commercial liability filing that exposes this entire company to felony prosecution,"" Sarah Vance said coldly, pulling Greg's corporate phone toward her across the glass table. ""The board meets at noon to vote on your formal termination for gross misconduct. If you have any dignity left, Greg, you'll walk out before the police arrive with the arrest warrants.""
Rachel stood frozen beside her chair, clutching her leather notebook to her chest. She looked between Greg and the board members, waiting for Greg to defend her, to assert his authority, to shield her the way he had promised in Aspen.
Instead, Greg turned on her like a cornered animal.
""This was all her idea!"" Greg shouted, pointing a trembling finger straight at Rachel’s face. ""She came to me three months ago! She said her husband was a spineless programmer who would sign anything she put in front of him! She promised she had the collateral locked down! She drafted the Apex filings!""
Rachel gasped, staggering back a step as if she had been slapped. ""Greg! How could you say that? We planned this together! You told me we were going to build our own empire and leave everyone behind!""
""I never told you to forge bank documents!"" Greg yelled back, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. ""You set me up! You dragged me into your personal disaster!""
""Enough,"" Robert said, pressing the intercom button on the wall. ""Security, please escort Mr. Vance and Ms. Cole off the property immediately.""
Two uniformed security guards walked through the boardroom doors. Greg snatched his car keys off the table and shoved past them without looking back at Rachel once. He didn't offer to walk her out. He didn't ask if she had a lawyer. He abandoned her on the spot to save his own skin, exactly as anyone who knew his character would have predicted.
Rachel stood alone under the fluorescent lights, her neat corporate persona entirely unraveled. She looked at me, her eyes brimming with fresh tears, pleading for the sympathy I had given her for seven years.
""Ethan,"" she whispered, her voice shaking violently. ""Look at what he did to me. He used me. He promised he would protect me. You know what I'm like when I get ambitious... I lost my head. Please, don't let them arrest me. We can fix this together. We can pay the loan back from our savings.""
""Our savings are already gone, Rachel,"" I said, my voice steady and devoid of anger. ""You emptied forty-five thousand dollars into an account that is now frozen by court order. The only thing left to fix is my name on the mortgage.""
""I have nowhere to go,"" she sobbed, completely breaking down in front of the silent board members. ""My mother won't speak to me. My sister told me I'm dead to her. Greg threw me under the bus. I have nothing left.""
""You had everything five days ago,"" I said, stepping aside as the two security guards approached her. ""You had a home, a husband who searched for you until his feet bled, and a family that loved you. You traded all of it for a weekend in Aspen with a coward who wouldn't even hold the door for you.""
The guards gently took her by the elbows, guiding her toward the exit. She didn't fight back. She walked down the long carpeted hallway with her head bowed, her designer shoes clicking softly against the floor until the elevator doors closed between us.

Sarah turned to me, offering a weary, sad smile. ""Thank you, Ethan. For bringing the truth to light before they destroyed both our lives completely.""
""We saved ourselves, Sarah,"" I replied, exhaling a breath I felt like I had been holding for six days straight. ""Now we just have to finish cleaning up the debris.""
