Chapter 4 - The Panicked Luxury

The downtown high-rise condominium smelled of fresh paint, designer scented candles, and floral arrangements. Brooke was sitting at the marble kitchen island, browsing luxury furniture catalogs on her new tablet, when the front door burst open.
Daniel marched into the foyer, his hair disheveled, his expensive coat thrown over his arm, looking like a man who had barely escaped a burning building.
Brooke looked up with an excited smile. "Babe! Look at this sectional for the terrace. It's Italian leather, and they can deliver it by—"
"Pack your bags," Daniel interrupted, his voice hoarse and ragged.
Brooke froze, her smile fading into a confused pout. "What? What are you talking about?"
"We have to vacate the unit," Daniel said, pacing across the polished hardwood floor, running both hands through his hair. "The company froze the corporate accounts. The lease was flagged."
Brooke stood up slowly, setting her tablet down with a sharp clink against the stone island. "What do you mean, flagged? You told me this apartment was part of your executive package! You said you owned half that manufacturing plant!"
"I do own half!" Daniel yelled, turning on her with unexpected venom. "Claire pulled an illegal ambush with her family's dirty lawyer! She’s trying to intimidate me into a bad settlement!"
Brooke crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing with sharp, calculating realization. The wealthy, generous corporate titan who had bought her designer bags and promised her a life of country clubs had suddenly turned into an unemployed man carrying a cardboard box of personal desk items.
"Can't you just use your personal checking account to cover the rent until the court date?" Brooke asked, her tone shifting from playful affection to cold skepticism.
Daniel stopped pacing, his face contorting with humiliation. "The personal accounts were joint marital lines, Brooke. Claire filed an emergency asset freeze along with the proxy revocation. My personal card was declined at the parking garage two hours ago."
Brooke let out a sharp, bitter laugh that sounded nothing like the sweet, breathless giggle she had used at Miller’s Diner the previous morning.
"You're telling me you don't have any money?" Brooke demanded, taking a step backward. "You brought me to that diner yesterday to parade me in front of your ex-wife, and you didn't even have your finances locked down?!"
"I did it for us!" Daniel protested, reaching out to touch her shoulder. "I wanted her to know that I had moved on! That I was happy with you!"
Brooke slapped his hand away with unmasked disgust. "You didn't do it for us, Daniel. You did it for your stupid ego. You wanted to see her cry, and instead, she sat there eating pancakes while you made a complete fool of yourself."
Daniel stared at her, stunned by the sudden, brutal cruelty in her voice. The illusion of romantic devotion was evaporating right before his eyes, replaced by the ugly reality of transactional greed.
"I need you to stand by me, Brooke," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with desperate plea. "Once the divorce goes to trial, I will get my share of the equity. We will be fine."

Brooke picked up her phone, slipping it into her designer handbag without looking at him.
"I have an interview at a boutique gym in Lincoln Park at noon," Brooke said coldly, heading toward the bedroom to pack her things. "If the rent on this place isn't paid by the first of the month, Daniel, I'm staying with my sister."
