Chapter 10 - Sunshine on the Sound

By the summer of our third year together, Julian and I had created a life richer and more fulfilling than anything I had ever dared to dream.

We celebrated our wedding on a warm, golden evening in late August. There was no opulent hotel ballroom, no corporate guest list calculated for professional networking, and no stiff, theatrical pretense. We gathered on the green lawn overlooking the water at our home in West Seattle, surrounded by forty of our closest friends, colleagues, and family.

Marcus was there, laughing heartily by the raw oyster bar. Ryan was there, standing tall, having completely rebuilt his life as a community organizer, smiling warmly as he raised a glass of champagne in my direction. And standing beside me was Julian, dressed in a simple linen suit, looking at me with eyes full of quiet adoration and unwavering partnership.

We took our vows under an arbor wrapped in wild greenery and white roses, with the gentle lapping of Puget Sound waves serving as our music.

“Lauren,” Julian said, holding both of my hands in his, his voice carrying clearly on the soft summer breeze. “You taught me that love isn't about shrinking to fit into someone else’s world. It’s about standing side by side, making the world wider, brighter, and kinder for each other. I promise to honor your brilliance, protect your peace, and walk beside you as an equal for all the days we are given.”

As he slipped a simple gold band onto my finger, tears of pure, unadulterated joy ran down my cheeks.

Later that evening, after the toasts had been made, the sourdough bread shared, and the music filled the cool night air, I walked down the stone steps toward the edge of our sea wall. The lights of downtown Seattle sparkled across the dark water in the distance—the very city where, years ago, I had sat on a cold floor at four in the morning, listening to my life shatter into pieces.

Back then, in the darkest hour of the night, I had thought the pain would destroy me. I had thought that when someone tells you you're not good enough, it marks you forever.

Now, looking across the glittering water under a sky filled with stars, I understood the truth.

Evan’s cruel words hadn't been the end of my story. They were the catalyst that had forced me to awaken. By refusing to settle for a man who treated love like a transaction and respect like a favor, I had reclaimed the steering wheel of my own destiny.

Julian walked down the steps behind me, draping a soft knit blanket over my shoulders. He didn't interrupt the silence. He simply wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin gently against my hair, watching the ferries glide across the bay.

“What are you thinking about?” he whispered.

I smiled into the gentle night wind, leaning back against his chest, feeling the steady, safe beat of his heart.

“I’m thinking about how lucky I am,” I answered softly. “That I didn't wait around for someone to give me permission to be happy.”

The past was gone, washed away like footprints on a rain-swept pier. Ahead lay a future of open water, steady winds, and a love that never asked me to be anything less than everything I was."
