Chapter 4 - The Shared Cloud

I stepped back into our dark, cavernous house at seven o'clock. The scent of cold coffee still lingered in the air. I didn't turn on the living room lights. Instead, I went straight to Daniel’s private study at the end of the hall.

The heavy mahogany door was closed, but it wasn't locked. Daniel felt safe here; this was his domain, the place where he closed multi-million-dollar deals and drank aged bourbon. I sat down in his leather swivel chair and looked at his backup desktop setup. He had a secondary tablet docked on the charging stand—an older model he rarely carried outside the house, yet one that remained permanently linked to his master Apple ID and his personal cloud storage.

He had always been careless with device synchronization. He believed that passwords were an adequate defense against the outside world, never considering that the threat would come from within his own perimeter. I pressed the home button. The screen asked for a six-digit passcode.

I didn't guess our wedding date. Daniel found sentimental passwords childish. I typed in the date he made senior partner at his firm: 0-8-1-4-1-9.

The screen flashed, unlocked, and settled onto the home screen.

My chest tightened as I tapped the messaging icon. There were hundreds of threads from colleagues, golf buddies, and real estate agents. But down near the middle, pinned under a nondescript contact name—"A. Vance"—was a thread that had received a message just twenty minutes prior.

I opened it.

The message from Daniel read: On my way with the lilies. Wear the green dress.

Ava’s response was an image: a selfie taken in a lavish, modern bathroom. She was young—mid-twenties at most—with striking auburn hair, hazel eyes, and an expression of confident, playful entitlement. The caption read: Waiting for you, handsome. Don't be late. Our reservation is at eight.

I scrolled up through the history. The thread spanned over fourteen months. Fourteen months of hotel bookings, flirty morning banter, and cruel, casual betrayals. But as I scrolled deeper, the nature of the messages shifted. It wasn't just physical infidelity.

*“Did the transfer clear for the design firm?”* Ava had asked in March.

*“Cleared yesterday,”* Daniel had replied. “$45,000 sent to the staging contractor. The Oakridge property will be ready for listing by summer. Once we flip it, the profits go straight to the offshore entity. She hasn't suspected a thing.”

I stopped breathing. The screen seemed to burn my retinas.

*Oakridge property? Offshore entity?*

I exited the messaging app and immediately opened the files application. Hidden inside an archive labeled "Tax Returns 2021" was a folder named Project Horizon. I opened it, my fingers numb.

It contained scanned property deeds, wire transfer confirmations, and bank statements from an institution in the Cayman Islands. Daniel hadn't just taken a mistress. For over a year, he had been systematically siphoning funds out of our joint commercial accounts, funneling capital through shell LLCs, and purchasing real estate assets solely under Ava Vance’s name and a dummy corporate entity.

He wasn't merely having an affair. Daniel was quietly, methodically executing an exit strategy. He was draining the wealth we had built together over a decade, hiding the assets under another woman's signature, and preparing to leave me with an empty shell of a joint account while he stepped into a pre-funded luxury life.

A cruel laugh caught in my throat. He thought I was just the quiet wife buttering his toast in the morning. He thought I was blind, deaf, and helpless. He had no idea that he had just handed me every weapon I needed to take everything he owned.
