Chapter 4 - The Unopened Safe

Vanessa snatched the envelope off the mahogany surface as if it might vanish if she didn't strike quickly. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps, her manicured thumb tearing through the thick parchment paper. Inside was not a desperate letter from a dying wife, nor an emotional plea for mercy. It was a single folded sheet of heavy bank ledger paper, accompanied by a small metallic key that Daniel had never seen before.

Daniel leaned over her shoulder, his breath smelling of stale bourbon. “What is that? What did she write?”

Vanessa read the neat lines of handwriting out loud, her voice dropping lower with each passing syllable:

*“Vanessa,*

*If you are reading this in my home while my body is cold, it means Daniel finally found the courage to let you through the front door. You always admired my taste—my coat, my apartment, my husband’s company. But Daniel forgot to tell you how Mercer Logistics was incorporated. The algorithm that monitors every cargo vessel on the eastern seaboard wasn’t funded by his family money. It was registered under my maiden name at the patent office in Delaware, tied to a private contingency account at Sovereign Trust.*

*The safe won’t open with an anniversary date. It will only open when the biometric scanner on the interior latch confirms that my pulse has stopped for seventy-two hours without an active medical override. If you touch that panel before the hospital finalizes the certificate, an automated breach notice transmits to every investor on our capital cap table.*

*Enjoy the wine. It was purchased for our tenth anniversary, which Daniel won’t live to see as a free man.”*

Vanessa dropped the paper onto the desk as though it had burned her skin. “She knew,” Vanessa whispered, her face draining of all color. “She knew about the offshore transfers. She knew about the Delaware filing.”

“That’s impossible!” Daniel shouted, slamming his glass down so hard the bourbon sloshed over the wood. “Claire didn't check the corporate accounts! She was on bed rest for twelve weeks! She spent her days knitting blankets and crying over baby clothes!”

“You idiot!” Vanessa screamed, turning on him with venomous fury. “She wasn't knitting, Daniel! She was auditing you! The woman was a senior systems architect before she married you, and you treated her like an ornament because she wanted a family! Who do you think leaked the internal payroll discrepancies to the Securities Commission last month? We thought it was an disgruntled programmer—it was her!”

Just then, Daniel’s phone vibrated against the marble counter. The screen lit up with the name of the administrative director from Wakefield Regional Medical Center.

Daniel grabbed it, his heart hammering against his ribs. “Hello? Yes, this is Daniel Mercer.”

The voice on the other end was formal, flat, and completely devoid of emotion. “Mr. Mercer, this is Director Vance from Hospital Administration. We require your immediate presence at the facility. There is an irregularity in the documentation submitted regarding the maternal mortality report and the guardianship filings for the two infants currently in the Level IV nursery.”

“An irregularity?” Daniel stammered, casting a terrified glance at Vanessa. “What kind of irregularity? The doctor told me Claire didn't survive the arrest.”

“Mr. Mercer,” the director said, pausing just long enough to make Daniel’s stomach drop into a bottomless pit, “you need to come down here right now. And bring your legal counsel.”
