Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Partnership

Daniel backed away down the carpeted hallway until his shoulders hit the elevator doors. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a wax statue melting under heat.
"You're... you're her cousin," Daniel stammered, his fingers trembling against his trouser seams. "The investment banker in Manhattan."
"Managing director of Lawson Capital," Michael corrected with cool, surgical precision. "The firm holding the primary underwriting review for your fifteen-million-dollar emergency credit facility."
Daniel gasped, clutching his chest with both hands as if he were having a physical coronary event.
"No," Daniel whispered, shaking his head in absolute denial. "No, that's impossible. The New York syndicate is called Apex Horizon Partners! I met with their junior associates three weeks ago!"
"Apex Horizon is a single-purpose acquisition vehicle formed under Lawson Capital's private equity umbrella," Michael explained, pulling a pristine business card from his pocket and sliding it into Daniel’s trembling breast pocket. "And seventy percent of Apex's master fund is capitalized by the Lawson-Miller Heritage Trust."
Michael took a half-step forward, his tall frame completely towering over my shaking husband.
"Which means, Daniel," Michael concluded with cold finality, "that your entire commercial lifeline belongs to Claire."
Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the brass handrail beside the elevator to keep from collapsing onto the floor.
He looked from Michael to me, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish on a dry dock.
Twenty-four years of arrogance, dismissive lectures, and condescending betrayals evaporated in a single, devastating instant.
The woman he had called an emotional anchor around his neck, the wife he had discarded to chase a younger mistress, held the absolute power of life and death over his entire corporate empire.
Before Daniel could speak, the elevator bell chimed with a clear, cheerful ring.
The doors parted to reveal Rachel Morgan standing inside, holding two shopping bags from an expensive Salem antique boutique, her hair freshly blown out.
She stepped out into the hallway, smiling warmly at Daniel until she saw Michael and me standing three feet away.
"Daniel?" Rachel asked, her smile freezing into an annoyed scowl. "What is going on out here? Did you get the breakfast vouchers from the desk?"
Daniel didn't even turn his head toward her. He stared at me with wide, bloodshot eyes filled with raw, unadulterated panic.
"Claire, please," Daniel choked out, tears of sheer terror welling up in his eyes. "We need to go home. We need to sit down in Marblehead and talk about this as a family."
Rachel dropped her shopping bags onto the floor, stepping forward with rising fury.
"Go home?" Rachel shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me. "Daniel, what are you talking about? You promised me we were touring the coastal properties in Gloucester this afternoon!"
May you like
"Shut up, Rachel!" Daniel roared, turning on her with sudden, venomous hatred that made her jump backward. "Just shut your mouth and get your bags packed!"
Rachel stared at him in utter disbelief, her face crumbling as the man who had promised her the world turned into a snarling, cornered beast.
