Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

By Wednesday afternoon, Matthew Carver was feeling triumphant.
He sat in the main executive boardroom of Carver Building Group on the twelfth floor of their corporate headquarters. Beside him sat Serena, dressed in a sharp ivory pantsuit, her portfolio open on the glass table.
“She hasn't responded to any of the messages,” Matthew said, checking his watch for the third time. “Her car wasn't at the hotel downtown. Her brother isn't answering his phone either. I think she’s hiding out at an Airbnb to drag this out.”
“Let her drag it out,” Serena said, placing a warm hand on his forearm. “The law is on our side, Matt. The longer she abandons the property, the easier it is for us to file for temporary possession of the house. I’ve already spoken to the contractor. We can knock out that ridiculous country kitchen wall by next Friday.”
The boardroom door swung open.
Matthew looked up, expecting his chief financial officer.
Instead, Evelyn walked into the room.
She was wearing a tailored navy blazer, dark trousers, and low heels. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon. She didn't look like a woman who had spent the last two nights crying in a hotel room. She looked like an executive walking into a hostile takeover.
Behind her came Arthur Vance and two junior associates carrying leather litigation bags.
Matthew stood up, frowning. “Evie? What is this? If you’re here to sign the settlement, we could have done this at Arthur’s office. You didn't need to bring a circus to my headquarters.”
“Your headquarters?” Evelyn took a seat at the far end of the long conference table, deliberately placing herself opposite him. “Sit down, Matthew.”
“Don’t take that tone with me,” Matthew snapped, his face reddening. “Serena, call security. Have them escort Arthur’s team out of the building. We’ll reschedule this through proper channels.”
Serena reached for the conference room phone.
“I wouldn't touch that phone, Ms. Blake,” Arthur Vance said mildly, opening his briefcase. “Unless you want the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to arrive alongside security.”
Serena froze, her hand hovering over the receiver. “What are you talking about?”
Before Matthew could shout, the heavy double doors at the side of the room opened.
The room went instantly silent.
Richard Carver was wheeled into the room by his personal nurse. He sat tall in his chair, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his gaze fixed directly on his son.
Matthew’s jaw dropped. “Dad? What are you doing here? You shouldn't be traveling—the doctor said the stress—”
“Shut up, Matthew,” Richard said. His voice wasn't loud, but it had the density of granite. It pinned Matthew to the floor.
Richard signaled his nurse, who wheeled him to the head of the table.
“This is an emergency meeting of the board of directors of Carver Building Group,” Richard announced. “Present by proxy is our majority voting interest. Arthur, distribute the documents.”
Arthur’s associates moved with practiced speed, sliding thick blue folders in front of Matthew and Serena.
“What is this?” Matthew stammered, flipping open the first page. His eyes scanned the header, and all the color suddenly vanished from his face.
“That,” Evelyn said, leaning forward, “is a forensic report detailing three million two hundred and forty thousand dollars transferred from Carver Building Group’s operating reserves to Apex Development Partners over the last seven months. An entity whose sole beneficiary is Serena Blake.”
Serena jumped to her feet. “Those were legitimate consulting advances for the downtown stadium project!”
“The downtown stadium project whose municipal RFP hasn't even been published yet?” Arthur countered, looking over his spectacles at Serena. “You billed Carver Building Group four hundred thousand dollars a month for market feasibility studies, Ms. Blake, which were subsequently transferred into a private offshore investment portfolio in the Cayman Islands under your maiden name.”
Matthew turned to Serena, his eyes wide with sudden panic. “Wait... what Cayman portfolio? You told me that money was parked in an escrow holding account for land acquisition!”
Serena’s jaw tightened. She looked trapped, glancing between Matthew and the documents. “It was... it was for tax sheltering, Matt. For our future.”
“There is no future,” Richard Carver roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table with enough force to make the water glasses rattle. “Effective twelve minutes ago, Matthew Carver has been removed from his position as Chief Operating Officer of Carver Building Group. His corporate credit cards have been deactivated. His access to company accounts has been terminated.”
Matthew looked like he had been struck with a baseball bat. “Dad! You can’t do this! I built this division! You can’t fire me over a personal marital dispute!”
“You didn't keep it personal, you arrogant fool!” Richard shouted back, his face crimson. “You brought a thief into my company, you embezzled from the family trust to screw your wife out of her rightful marital property, and you did it under my name!”
Richard turned his gaze to Serena. “Ms. Blake, your employment is terminated immediately for cause. You have twenty minutes to collect your personal effects under the supervision of corporate security. If you take one paperclip or one digital file, the criminal complaint sitting on the prosecutor’s desk will be filed before three o'clock.”
Serena stood rigid. Her polished facade cracked completely, revealing the raw, calculating panic beneath. She looked at Matthew, expecting him to fight for her.
Matthew was staring at the table, his breath coming in shallow gasps. “Dad... please. Evie, talk to him. Tell him this is too far. We can work this out. We can split everything fifty-fifty. Whatever you want!”
Evelyn picked up her pen. She looked at the man she had loved for nearly a decade, the man who had promised to love her through barrenness, through sickness, through everything life could throw at them.
She felt no hatred. Only a profound, liberating emptiness.

“I don’t want your fifty percent, Matthew,” Evelyn said softly. “I’m taking what was stolen from me. And you are going to pay back every single dime you took from your father.”
She stood up, buttoned her blazer, and walked out of the room, leaving Matthew Carver listening to the sound of his entire empire collapsing into dust.
