Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

David looked at me, his eyes blazing. “That’s first-degree attempted murder, extortion, and felony coercion. We have everything.”

I nodded toward the basement stairs. “Tell Alvarez to wait thirty seconds. I want to walk in first.”

I stepped out of the office and walked quietly down the hall. I turned the doorknob and pushed the bedroom door wide open.

Ethan’s hand was physically forcing Margaret’s trembling fingers against the signature line of the property deed. Diane was pinning Margaret’s other arm against the mattress. Both of them froze, their heads snapping toward me in sheer panic.

Ethan instantly dropped Margaret’s hand, attempting to flash his trademark charming grin. “Claire! Honey, I thought you were in the kitchen. We were just... Grandma was feeling a little dizzy, and she wanted to sign these medical consent forms before her mind wandered again.”

I stood in the doorway, my arms crossed over my chest, my face an impenetrable mask of pure disdain. “Is that what you call an emergency deed transfer to Apex Horizon Holdings in Belize, Ethan?”

Ethan’s smile instantly withered. The color drained from his face until he looked like a walking corpse. “What... what did you just say?”

Diane stood up quickly, smoothing her designer coat, her voice rising in defensive hysteria. “Claire, you have no right to question our family’s legal decisions! You’re just a wife. You don’t understand these complex financial instruments. Ethan is trying to protect his inheritance from government taxes!”

“I understand financial instruments far better than you do, Diane,” I said, taking two deliberate steps into the room. “For example, I understand that you used an unlicensed appraisal firm owned by your nephew to artificially depress the market valuation of Margaret’s estate by 70% to avoid transfer taxes. I also understand that the Belize shell company you registered uses your maiden name and Ethan’s Atlantic City tax ID.”

Ethan lunged toward the nightstand, grabbing the stack of papers to hide them. “You’ve been going through my things? You psycho! Who the hell do you think you are?”

“I’m a Senior Forensic Investigator for the United States Treasury and the Department of Justice, Ethan,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “The woman you called a ‘spreadsheet babysitter’ for five years.”

Diane gasped, stumbling backward against the dresser. “Ethan... what is she talking about?”

“She’s bluffing!” Ethan screamed, his composure shattering completely as veins bulged along his neck. “You don't have anything, Claire! This is my house! This is my family! Get out of here before I throw you down the stairs myself!”

“Step away from the victim, Mr. Cole.”

Detective Alvarez and Detective Miller walked through the bedroom door, their badges gleaming on their belts, their service weapons drawn at low ready. Behind them stood David Vance and Arthur Sterling, both holding thick manila folders containing federal subpoena forms.

Ethan backed into the corner, his breathing frantic, knocking over a lamp. “Wait! Wait! This is a misunderstanding! My grandmother has dementia! Claire is crazy—she has a history of severe psychiatric delusions! Check her medical files!”
