Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Sienna let out a choked, ragged gasp, dropping her leather portfolio onto the floor.

Dozens of color-coded financial spreadsheets and offshore bank wire confirmations spilled across the polished white marble.

One of Arthur’s associates stepped forward with a digital camera, methodically photographing the documents where they lay.

"Project Horizon was a private consulting vehicle," Preston argued, his voice cracking into high-pitched panic as he backed away toward the patio doors.

"It had nothing to do with the Sterling accounts! It was independently financed through European venture funds!"

"The European venture funds were routed through Hellenic Maritime LLC in Cyprus, Preston," Arthur said calmly, pulling a blue-bound dossier from his coat.

"Which was funded by unauthorized drawdowns against Elise's late mother's trust."

Arthur pointed a steady, gloved finger at Sienna Rowe, who was trembling against the refrigerator door.

"Miss Rowe, your signature appears on twenty-four separate wire transfers totaling thirty-eight million dollars over the past thirty-six months."

"I was just following executive instructions!" Sienna cried, tears cutting dark tracks through her expensive foundation.

"Preston told me it was part of his restructuring package! He told me Elise was legally incompetent and that the board had authorized the liquidity transfers!"

"You lying snake!" Preston roared, lunging toward Sienna with his fist raised.

Before he could cross the kitchen floor, the two plainclothes federal agents moved in lockstep.

With blinding, clinical efficiency, the lead agent seized Preston’s right arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed his chest flat against the quartz island.

The sound of his breath leaving his lungs was loud and hollow in the silent room.

The steel handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with cold, metallic finality.

"Preston Vale," the agent announced, reading from a small laminated card.

"You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen securities, and conspiracy to commit aggravated financial fraud."

Willa stirred against my shoulder, letting out a small, fussy whimper at the commotion.

I gently rocked her back and forth, humming a soft, familiar lullaby beneath my breath, keeping her eyes turned away from the man who had traded her future for greed.

"Elise! Elise, tell them to stop!" Preston screamed, his cheek pressed hard against the cold stone counter.

"I am your husband! I am Willa’s father! You can't let them drag me out of here like a common street criminal!"

I walked over to where he was pinned, looking down into his wild, bloodshot eyes without a trace of anger, bitterness, or remorse.

"You gave a thief the camera into my daughter's nursery, Preston," I said softly, my voice barely louder than a whisper.

"You stopped being her father the second you turned her cradle into a crime scene."
