Chapter 7 - What Lay Beneath the Foundation

As the patrol cars pulled away with their sirens muted, Harrison remained on the porch with me, a team of two forensic accountants from the state attorney's office standing by with digital evidence crates.
“Daniela, there’s one more thing we need to inspect,” Harrison said, gesturing toward the open front door of the adjoining residence. “Arthur mentioned in his final affidavit that Richard Vance didn't just leave paper ledgers in that basement. He indicated there was physical property stored under the duplex foundation that Patricia was desperate to recover before the property was sold.”
I nodded, leading Harrison and the investigators down through the house and back into the subterranean basement.
The concrete chamber was cool and damp. Harrison walked directly past the folding table where the audio recorder had sat, heading straight for the dividing wall between the two properties. He stopped in front of the six-foot structural opening, shining a high-powered tactical flashlight down along the foundation footings where the concrete floor met the brick wall.
“Look here,” Harrison noted, pointing his light beam at the floorboards near the corner.
A rectangular section of the concrete floor had been scored with an industrial concrete saw and fitted with a recessed steel lifting ring. It was a subterranean floor safe, expertly concealed beneath a removable slab of reinforced resin that looked identical to the surrounding foundation.
I handed Harrison the heavy brass barrel key, but he shook his head, pointing to a four-digit mechanical combination dial embedded in the center of the steel plate.
“Do you know the sequence?” Harrison asked.
I paused, thinking back to my father’s final words in the hospital room. “Look at the sewing machine, Daniela. Everything starts with your mother.”
My mother’s birthday was June 14th, 1958.
I knelt down, gripping the cold brass dial. I spun it clockwise to 06, counterclockwise to 14, clockwise to 19, and completed the turn to 58.
A sharp, resonant clack echoed through the concrete chamber. The heavy locking bolts disengaged.
Harrison stepped forward and helped me heave the heavy steel hatch upward on its counterweighted pneumatic hinges.
The beam of our flashlights cut into the square recess beneath the foundation. Inside sat three heavy, waterproof steel lockboxes, flanked by two velvet-lined jeweler’s presentation cases.
Harrison carefully lifted the lid of the first lockbox. Inside, neatly bundled in bands of ten thousand dollars each, were stacks of pristine, uncirculated hundred-dollar bills—the emergency reserve fund Richard Vance had hidden away when he realized Patricia was draining their legitimate commercial accounts. Beside the cash boxes were the velvet cases. When I flipped the brass clasps open, the light reflected off a breathtaking array of vintage diamond, sapphire, and emerald jewelry.
These weren't just random valuables. These were the original heirloom pieces belonging to my grandmother, which had mysteriously vanished from our family home eight years ago during the week Marcus and I announced our engagement. Patricia had claimed at the time that my mother must have misplaced them due to early-onset forgetfulness. In reality, Patricia had stolen them, used Richard's hidden safe to store them, and was waiting for the statute of limitations to expire before fencing them through private brokers in New York.
“She stole my grandmother’s jewelry,” I whispered, my voice trembling with profound vindication. “She took them from my mother’s bedroom eight years ago and made Elena believe she was losing her mind.”

Harrison shook his head in grim disgust. “This isn't just financial fraud anymore, Daniela. This is organized grand larceny, possession of stolen property exceeding first-degree thresholds, and systematic psychological torture. Patricia Vance is looking at fifteen to twenty-five years in maximum security. And because Marcus signed his name as a contingent beneficiary on the duplex deed modification two years ago, he will be prosecuted as an active co-conspirator.”
The investigators carefully cataloged each item, placing them into tamper-evident evidence bags while Harrison signed off on the chain of custody forms. Every single lie, every single manipulation, and every single cruel word Patricia had uttered over the last decade had just been meticulously unmasked, documented, and dismantled.
