Chapter 8 - Cleaning House

The front door clicked shut, locking the Whitmore family out in the freezing autumn rain.

Evelyn stood in the quiet foyer for a long minute, letting the silence settle into the walls of the hundred-year-old estate. For the first time in seventeen years, the air inside the house felt clean.

She walked back into the dining room.

Thomas Vance was seated at the far end of the walnut table, his laptop open and legal briefs neatly arranged around his coffee cup.

"The federal court confirmed the receivership transfer, Evelyn," Vance said, looking up with genuine respect in his eyes. "The board of directors has been officially dissolved. As the supermajority shareholder and sole creditor, you have full executive authority effective at 8:00 AM tomorrow."

"What is the damage on the operating reserves?" Evelyn asked, pulling out Arthur’s chair and sitting down.

"Daniel blew through roughly twelve million dollars over the last eighteen months on unapproved executive perquisites, offshore transfers, and luxury real estate leases," Vance reported, sliding an audit summary across the table. "However, the underlying manufacturing core and maritime shipping contracts are completely solid. Under your debt restructuring plan from 2009, the business will be cash-flow positive within sixty days."

Evelyn traced the edge of Arthur’s polished walnut table with her fingertip.

"And the workers?"

"The pension shortfall can be fully restored by liquidating Daniel's personal fleet of sports cars and his luxury box at Fenway Park," Vance smiled faintly. "Your father-in-law would be proud, Evelyn."

"Arthur knew this day was coming," Evelyn whispered softly. "He spent his last years watching his son turn into an empty, predatory shell. He made me promise I wouldn't let Daniel drown the workers along with his ego."

"What about Vanessa Miller?" Vance asked.

"Recover the five million dollars Daniel illegally transferred to her offshore account," Evelyn instructed coldly. "Leave her the child support claim against Daniel's personal bankruptcy estate. If he has nothing left, that is between the two of them. I will not finance another woman’s treason, but I will not pursue an unborn child."

"Understood," Vance said, closing his laptop. "Tomorrow morning at eight, the executive team expects their new chairman."

"I won't be late," Evelyn replied.
