Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth in the Letter

The kitchen table seemed colder than ever as the morning sun cut across the worn wood. Colin sat entirely motionless across from me, his hands clasped so tightly over his knees that his knuckles were white. For nearly a full year, I had carried the bitter venom of betrayal inside my chest. I had gone through eight grueling rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of daily radiation, all while believing the man who held my hand at our wedding had simply discarded me when my health crumbled. Now, holding the thick sheets of paper covered in Peter's familiar, slanted handwriting, my vision blurred with an overwhelming rush of disbelief.

""My dearest Lydia,"" the letter began, the ink slightly faded at the margins. ""If you are reading this, it means you survived. It means my prayers every single night on my knees were answered, and that your body was strong enough to beat the monster that tried to steal you from this world. I know you hate me. I know Rebecca and Simon look at my name with pure disgust, and honestly, you have every right to do so. I had to let you hate me, Lydia. Because if you hated me, you would fight. If you were furious, you wouldn't give up. And most importantly, if we stayed together, the financial storm about to swallow me whole would have taken your life savings, your treatments, and our family home straight down with it.""

My hands shook so violently that the edge of the paper rattled against the rim of my forgotten coffee mug. I dropped the letter onto the table and grabbed the stack of formal documents resting beneath it. The first page was stamped with legal letterheads from an oncology clinic three states away, dated two months before my own diagnosis. Below that was a comprehensive medical dossier bearing Peter’s name, social security number, and an undeniable diagnosis of an aggressive, terminal neuroendocrine carcinoma. Beside it lay an intricate financial file: bankruptcy filings, second mortgage defaults, and predatory debt agreements tied to his small engineering consulting firm.

""What is this, Colin?"" I whispered, my voice cracking under the weight of the air leaving my lungs. ""Colin, look at me. What is this?""

Colin looked up, his eyes rimmed with red. He had known Peter since they were teenagers working at an auto body shop, sharing dreams before either of them had ever met their wives. ""He found out he was dying six weeks before your routine mammogram, Lydia,"" Colin said, his voice raw. ""He was preparing to tell you. He was going to sit you down that very weekend. But then you called him from the clinic crying, saying they had found a malignant mass in your breast. Everything changed in that single second.""

""Why didn't he tell me?"" The words felt torn out of my throat like shards of broken glass. ""We were married thirty-five years! You don't hide your own death from your wife!""

""Think about where you were, Lydia,"" Colin urged softly, leaning across the table. ""You were terrified. You were facing stage three cancer. The experimental immunotherapy program you desperately needed wasn't fully covered by your insurance. Meanwhile, Peter’s firm had gone under after his main contractor went bust. Creditors were circling him like vultures. If he stayed married to you, every dime of your marital assets, your home equity, and your joint retirement would have been seized to settle his business guarantees before you ever finished your first round of chemo. And worse, he knew your heart. If you knew he was dying, you would have refused your own expensive trials to stay home and nurse him. You would have surrendered your own survival.""

I pressed my palms against my temples, the room spinning around me. All those nights I spent weeping into my pillow, cursing his cowardice, wondering how love could evaporate overnight. It hadn't evaporated at all. It had mutated into an excruciating, horrifying sacrifice that I had never asked for, executed with ruthless precision by the man who had vowed to protect me until death parted us.
