Chapter 8 - The Confrontation At Ridgeview

The sky above Grapevine was gray and overcast as the tactical convoy moved silently into position. Daniela remained behind at the safehouse under the protective guard of two armed federal marshals and Claire. I rode in the passenger seat of Agent Miller’s unmarked vehicle, wearing a discreet wireless body transmitter hidden beneath the collar of my trench coat.
Ridgeview Medical Plaza was an upscale, modern complex of glass and sandstone, designed to project wealth and clinical legitimacy. We pulled into the rear lot, parking out of sight behind a bank of commercial delivery enclosures. Four tactical agents in plainclothes took up positions around the perimeter stairwells.
"You enter first," Agent Miller instructed, checking the audio levels on his tactical monitor. "Julian needs to present the documents and confirm the sedation protocol on the live feed. The moment he acknowledges administering drugs to Daniela or signs the fraudulent trust certifications, give the verbal code: 'The papers are finished.' We will breach the suite within five seconds."
I stepped out of the vehicle, the cold Texas wind whipping my hair across my face. My knees were shaking, but inside my chest burned a cold, immovable resolve. I walked through the heavy tinted glass doors of the executive rear entrance and took the elevator to the second floor.
The corridor was silent, smelling of industrial antiseptic and fresh paint. At the end of the hall, the frosted glass door read: Apex Genetics & Diagnostic Consultants – Private Laboratory.
I pushed the door open. A tiny chime sounded overhead.
The reception area was sleek, minimalist, and devoid of any patients. Standing beside an oak conference table were Julian, Marcus, and a tall, slender woman with sharp features, platinum-blonde hair tied in a severe bun, and frameless designer glasses. Vanessa Sterling.
When Julian saw me enter alone, his eyes flickered toward the doorway behind me. "Sofia? Where is Daniela? Why didn't you bring her inside?"
"She's in the car with a trusted friend downstairs," I replied, crossing my arms and standing firmly in the center of the room. "I'm not bringing my daughter up here until I see the documents and hear the truth from your mouth, Julian."
Marcus shifted uncomfortably against the wall, refusing to meet my eyes. He looked haggard, his skin tinged with an unhealthy gray sallow tone. "Sofia, please. Don't make this harder than it has to be."
"Shut up, Marcus," I snapped, cutting him down with a single glare. I turned back to Julian. "What was in the drinks you had Marcus give her?"
Dr. Vanessa Sterling stepped forward, her voice cool, condescending, and clinical. "Mrs. Vance, I can assure you that any mild sedative administered to Daniela was entirely within safe pediatric dosing parameters. It was necessary to keep her calm during venous blood draws and preliminary iliac crest marrow aspiration screenings. Children can be notoriously combative during invasive procedures."
"Iliac crest marrow aspiration?" The words felt like acid in my ears. "You put a bone marrow needle into my seven-year-old child while she was drugged?"
"It was a minor diagnostic extraction!" Julian stepped toward me, his hands outstretched in an appeal that reeked of desperation. "Sofia, Marcus is dying! His bone marrow is failing. Daniela is an absolute genetic match. Her marrow will save my brother's life, and her genetic certification releases eighty million dollars from Grandfather's trust! It solves every single problem we have!"
"And what about your embezzlement, Julian?" I demanded, my voice ringing clear and steady through the room. "What about the millions you stole from your hedge fund clients? You didn't do this to save Marcus. You did this to save yourself from federal prison!"
Julian’s face twisted in an instant. The polished, handsome corporate executive vanished, replaced by an enraged, cornered beast. He lunged forward, grabbing my wrists with bruising force. "Listen to me, you ungrateful bitch! Everything I built, every luxury you and that child enjoy, exists because I took risks! You are going to go downstairs, you are going to bring Daniela up to this lab right now, and you are going to sign these custody consent papers so Dr. Sterling can complete the marrow harvest procedure!"
He shoved a thick stack of legal documents across the conference table, his knuckles white against the paper. "Sign them, Sofia! The papers are finished!"

I looked Julian dead in his frantic, bloodshot eyes, and a slow, cold smile crossed my lips.
"The papers are finished," I repeated clearly into the empty air.
