Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Shadows

Margaret stared at me, her chest heaving, her eyes wild with a mixture of hatred and growing terror. For the first time in her life, her insults had no power. Her status meant nothing. She was standing in an ordinary parish office, facing the total collapse of everything she had spent four decades constructing.
“You think you’ve won, don’t you?” Margaret snarled, leaning forward until the scent of her expensive perfume was suffocating. “You think because you played a clever little game with the police that you’re safe? Richard’s partners are not just bankers and lawyers, Emily. There are people who invested ten million dollars in his Riverfront development who will not take this loss lightly. When they realize why the project collapsed, they won't come after Richard in prison. They will come looking for the girl who blew the whistle.”
Detective Bennett stepped forward, placing two fingers firmly against Margaret’s shoulder and pushing her back a step.
“That sounds remarkably like a terroristic threat, Mrs. Whitmore,” Bennett said coldly. “Would you like to spend the night in the precinct right across from your son? Because I would be more than happy to add witness intimidation to your family's growing docket.”
Margaret glanced at Bennett’s badge, then looked back at me with unbridled venom. “We are far from finished, Emily. You will regret the day you ever crossed the Whitmore family.”
With a violent spin of her heels, Margaret marched out of the rectory, her heels clicking angrily down the hallway until the heavy exterior door slammed shut.
Bennett sighed, running a hand over her face. “She’s desperate. But don't dismiss what she said entirely. Richard’s largest private investor is a man named Viktor Vance. Vance is a notorious private equity shark with a reputation for ruthless debt recovery. He backed Richard’s last two major commercial deals with nearly twenty million dollars in high-interest mezzanine financing.”
I walked over to the rectory window, looking out into the church courtyard where the autumn leaves were swirling in the chilly afternoon wind. “I reviewed the Riverfront balance sheets two nights ago, Sarah. Viktor Vance didn’t invest twenty million out of goodwill. He knew Richard was overleveraged. He was waiting for Richard to default so he could seize the entire Riverfront development at five cents on the dollar.”
Bennett raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. “You caught that in forty-eight hours?”
“That's what I do,” I said softly, turning back to face her. “Richard thought I only knew how to read household budgets. He never realized that forensic accounting was my specialty long before I ever met him. Viktor Vance isn't coming after me. He's coming after whatever assets Richard has left.”
My personal phone, which had been buzzing nonstop in my evening clutch, suddenly displayed a private incoming number. I hesitated for a moment, then tapped the screen and held the phone to my ear.
“Emily Carter?” a deep, gravelly voice inquired on the other end.
“Speaking,” I said calmly.
“My name is Viktor Vance,” the man said, his tone measured, devoid of hostility, but vibrating with quiet authority. “I watched the livestream from the cathedral. Remarkable performance, Miss Carter. Most brides simply cry and file for divorce. You dismantled an entire corporate structure in thirty seconds.”
“If you’re calling to demand repayment on Richard's debts, Mr. Vance, you’re calling the wrong person,” I replied steadily. “I am not his wife, and I share zero liability for his fraud.”
A low, dry chuckle rumbled through the receiver. “I don't care about Richard’s petty excuses, Miss Carter. He was an incompetent front man who outlived his usefulness months ago. What I care about is the thirty million dollars in hidden assets he buried in offshore dummy corporations. The authorities won't find them—Richard’s shell network was designed by Zurich lawyers to disappear into thin air. But my sources tell me that you hold the encrypted keys to his secondary ledger.”

I remained silent, looking over at Detective Bennett, who was watching my face closely.
“I have a proposal for you, Miss Carter,” Vance continued smoothly. “Help me recover my principal investment before the federal receivers take everything, and I will ensure that Margaret Whitmore and her remaining allies never bother you again for the rest of your natural life.”
