Chapter 8 - What the Cameras Caught

Teresa didn’t answer the call.
She handed the phone to her lawyer instead.
By that evening, investigators had arranged a formal interview and advised her about immediate safety measures.
She finally admitted what the property company had purchased.
Not a family investment.
A partially renovated house for Enzo and Celeste, bought through an associate of Victor’s at an inflated price.
Part of the loan had returned to Victor as an undisclosed fee.
The arrangement had trapped everyone involved in a transaction nobody wanted examined.
Except me.
And now Leon.
Over the next week, the investigation expanded.
The storage unit was searched under a warrant. It contained business records, old computers, and boxes removed from my grandmother’s building during the renovation.
My missing thimble had been the smallest thing Enzo took.
There were property files, identification copies, and blank stationery.
One box contained photographs of me at seventeen.
I sat in Evelyn’s office looking at the inventory and felt a strange, clean fury.
He hadn’t merely betrayed our relationship.
He had treated my whole life as something available for use.
Leon came home late that night.
I had returned to his house two evenings earlier, keeping my separate room.
We were learning to have ordinary conversations again.
He found me at the kitchen table.
“I saw the inventory,” I said.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know you are.”
He sat across from me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then I took my ring from my pocket and placed it on the table.
His gaze settled on it.
“I’m still angry,” I said.
“You should be.”
“I’m also tired of pretending anger is the only thing I feel.”
He looked up.
“When Victor came to the shop, I called you because I wanted you there. When something good happens, I still want to tell you.”
His breathing changed.
“That doesn’t cancel anything.”
“No.”
“But it matters.”
“Yes,” he said.
I slid the ring toward him.
“Ask me again. Without a room full of people leaving.”
Leon stood.
He came around the table slowly, giving me time to change my mind.
Then he knelt.
“Mara Vale, will you keep building this marriage with me?”
I laughed through sudden tears.
“That’s less glamorous.”
“I’m trying to be accurate.”
“Yes,” I whispered.
He put the ring back on my finger.
This time, when he kissed me, I didn’t feel like a woman being rescued.
I felt like a woman arriving somewhere she had chosen.
Three days later, Enzo asked to meet.
He sent the request through Evelyn, claiming he wanted to return personal belongings and discuss cooperation.
She arranged a daytime meeting in her building’s conference room.
Enzo arrived twenty minutes early.
Instead of checking in, he waited near the rear entrance.
I saw him when Ruth dropped me off.
“Mara,” he called.
I stopped beneath the security camera.
“Go to reception.”
“I just need five minutes.”
“You can have them upstairs.”
He stepped closer.
His face looked thinner. The charm had worn off around the edges.
“Celeste turned on me. My mother’s protecting herself. Leon thinks he can hand everyone over and walk away clean.”
“He isn’t walking away clean.”
Enzo looked at my ring.
“So you really love him.”
I hadn’t said it aloud yet.
But standing there, I knew.
“Yes.”
His expression tightened.
“I loved you first.”
“You had four years to show me.”
He caught my wrist.
Not hard enough to bruise immediately.
Hard enough that I stopped breathing.
“Don’t do this to me.”
I raised my voice.
“Let go.”
The rear door opened.
A security guard stepped out.
Enzo released me at once.
“I was just talking.”
The guard looked up at the camera.
“Then the recording should show that.”
Everything happened quickly after that.
The building manager called police. Evelyn came downstairs. Ruth returned from the parking garage, furious enough to frighten everyone.
Leon arrived last.
He saw the red marks on my wrist.
For one terrible second, I thought he would become the man people whispered about.
Instead, he stopped several feet from Enzo.
He turned to me.
“Do you want me beside you?”
“Yes.”
May you like
He came to my side.
And when the officer asked what happened, Leon let me answer.
