Chapter 7 - The Arrest in the Rotunda

Daniel stepped forward, his arrogance replaced by a frantic, pathetic desperation. He fell to his knees right there on the polished courtroom floor, grabbing at the hem of my suit jacket. “Evelyn, please! You have millions! You have hundreds of millions! What is forty-two million to you? Just forgive the loan! Tell the Apex board to roll the debt over! If Dad goes to prison, I’ll have nothing! I don't know how to work a normal job! I can't survive out there!”
I looked down at my younger brother—the golden child who had spent his life stepping on everyone beneath him, secure in the false belief that his family's wealth made him superior to the rest of humanity.
“You’re thirty-two years old, Daniel,” I told him softly, gently pulling my jacket free from his grasp. “When Father kicked me out, I had five hundred dollars and a high school diploma. I worked three graveyard shifts at a diner to put myself through college while studying corporate finance during the day. You have an Ivy League degree that Father bought for you. Perhaps it’s finally time for you to learn what honest work feels like.”
Richard lunged forward again, spitting with rage as the bailiffs grabbed his arms. “You will burn in hell for this, Evelyn! I built an empire! You hear me? An empire! You will never take it from me! I’ll file for bankruptcy! I’ll hide every asset in overseas trusts! You won't see a single dime!”
“I don't need your dimes, Richard,” I replied, fastening my briefcase with a quiet click. “Apex Sovereign Capital already holds senior perfected liens on every property, bank account, and corporate vehicle you own. There are no assets left for you to hide.”
As the bailiffs escorted me through the heavy courtroom doors into the bustling public rotunda, a team of four men dressed in dark suits and windbreakers bearing gold letters stepped through the security checkpoint. The crowd parted instantly as the agents walked with purposeful, measured strides directly toward Courtroom 4B.
The lead agent, a tall woman with an FBI credentials badge clipped to her lapel, stepped in front of Richard Carter as he was being escorted out into the hallway.
“Richard Carter? Daniel Carter?” the agent asked in a crisp, authoritative tone.
Richard stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit doors. “Who wants to know?”
The agent produced an official red-stamped warrant. “Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Task Force. We have an active arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. You are both being placed under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and aggravated identity theft involving the fraudulent encumbrance of Eleanor Whitmore’s estate.”
A collective gasp echoed across the vast marble rotunda. Camera shutters clicked in a blinding barrage of flashes as news crews captured every excruciating second. Patricia collapsed onto an ornate wooden bench, wailing uncontrollably as federal agents turned Richard and Daniel around, forcing their hands behind their backs and clicking cold steel handcuffs around their wrists.

“You can’t do this!” Daniel screamed, weeping openly as tourists and court spectators pulled out their smartphones to record his arrest. “I didn't sign anything! It was all my father! He made me do it! Dad, tell them! Tell them it wasn't me!”
Richard didn't answer. He hung his head, his face as white as ash, as the federal marshals led him away through the crowd of flashing cameras, his reign of unchecked arrogance brought to a sudden, permanent halt.
