Chapter 4 - The Secrets in the Floorboards

Two days later, accompanied by a police escort and Samuel Grayson, Wyatt and I walked up the broad stone steps of Hayes Manor.

The estate was a sprawling, historic Georgian property set on ninety acres of rolling oak forest and manicured gardens. For my entire childhood, this place had felt like a gilded prison. My bedroom had been a tiny, unheated garret above the garage, while Melanie enjoyed a two-room master suite with a walk-in wardrobe and a private balcony overlooking the fountain.

A locksmith worked for nearly an hour on the heavy oak double doors leading into the sealed east wing. When the heavy padlocks finally gave way, the doors groaned open on rusted iron hinges, releasing a scent of aged cedar, old parchment, and dried lavender.

""Arthur kept this wing entirely separate from the main house after your grandmother passed,"" Grayson said, stepping carefully across the hardwood floor with his walnut cane. ""He knew Richard would rifle through his desk the moment he turned his back. So he had a specialized contractor from Germany install a floor safe beneath the library.""

Wyatt helped me navigate the dust-sheeted furniture. My head still throbbed whenever I moved too quickly, but the sight of my grandfather’s study brought an overwhelming rush of warmth to my heart. On the wall hung a large oil portrait of Arthur Hayes, his eyes crinkling with the same quiet, gentle humor I remembered from my youth.

Grayson pointed toward the center of the Persian rug. Wyatt rolled the heavy wool fabric back, revealing a seamless section of parquetry flooring. Grayson knelt down, pressed a concealed catch within the baseboard molding, and a four-foot section of oak lifted smoothly on hydraulic springs, exposing a heavy, digital steel vault door.

""The code is Arthur's birthday followed by yours,"" Grayson said, gesturing toward me.

With trembling fingers, I tapped the numbers into the illuminated keypad: 0-8-1-4-0-9-2-2.

A heavy mechanical thunk echoed through the floorboards. The vault door unsealed, swinging upward.

Inside the climate-controlled chamber lay four fireproof metal filing boxes, several velvet jewel cases, and a vintage audio reel player with three magnetic tape boxes stacked beside it.

Wyatt reached down and carefully lifted the audio player and the tapes. ""What are these?""

""Audio recordings,"" Grayson said with a grim smile. ""Arthur was a meticulous man. When he realized Richard was attempting to tamper with his food and medicine in 2014, he had miniature wiretaps installed in the kitchen pantry and the master study. He documented every single conversation Richard and Linda had regarding their plans to forge his will and eliminate Sadie's share of the lineage.""

I opened the top metal filing box. Inside were real estate deeds to commercial properties in downtown Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta, all held in an offshore umbrella trust that Richard had never been able to access. But beneath the deeds lay a single, leather-bound diary with my grandfather’s initials stamped in gold: A.H.

I opened the book to the final entry, dated three days before Arthur’s death:

>*""My precious Sadie, if you are reading this, I am already resting beside your grandmother, and Richard has finally revealed his true monster within. Do not shed a single tear for the blood that shares your veins if that blood seeks to destroy your spirit. Family is not born of biology; it is forged in loyalty, honor, and love. Everything I built, I built for your gentle soul. Use this wealth to heal, to build, and to protect yourself. And remember: the darkest night always breaks before the dawn. I love you endlessly. — Grandfather Arthur.""*

Tears spilled over my cheeks, stinging the fresh sutures along my eye, but for the first time in ten years, they were not tears of pain or terror. They were tears of profound liberation.

""Look at this,"" Wyatt said, pulling a secondary folder from the safe. ""Sadie, your father didn't just embezzle from the logistics firm. He was using Hayes Manor as collateral for illegal loans from an organized loan shark network in South Chicago. He took out three million dollars in private debt under his personal signature, claiming he was the sole owner of the title.""

Grayson chuckled coldly. ""Which means those ruthless creditors cannot touch one square inch of this property, because Richard never legally owned it. The deed remained in Arthur's trust. The creditors will have to seek recovery entirely from Richard Hayes’s personal assets.""

""Which are zero,"" Wyatt noted with a grim grin.

""Precisely,"" Grayson agreed. ""Richard’s personal bank balances are completely overdrawn. When those predatory lenders discover that their debtor is sitting in Cook County Jail without a single dime to his name, they will liquidate every luxury watch, every sports car, and every piece of jewelry Linda and Melanie possess.""
