Chapter 5 - Busted in Broad Daylight

""Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!""
The roar of tactical commands echoed through the foyer as half a dozen armed FBI agents and city detectives flooded the living room, their weapons drawn and trained on Gregory.
""Down on the floor! Now! Gregory Vance, get on the ground!"" Detective Miller shouted, her service weapon leveled directly at his chest.
Gregory stumbled backward, knocking over an antique floor vase that shattered against the hearth. ""What is the meaning of this?! This is my private residence! You have no right to enter my home!""
""Gregory Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, bank fraud, and felony elder financial abuse,"" Miller announced coldly, producing a signed warrant. ""We have an open federal wiretap authorization, and every word of your confession regarding the Ward trust, forged signatures, and fraudulent probate filings was recorded in real time.""
Pamela began screaming hysterically, backing away with her hands raised. ""I didn't do anything! It was all him! It was Gregory’s idea! He forced me to sign those papers!""
""Shut up, Pamela!"" Gregory bellowed, his veins bulging violently along his neck as an agent shoved him face-first onto the oriental rug, wrenching his arms behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the silent room. ""Samantha! Tell them! Tell them you're my daughter! You can't do this to me!""
""You stopped being my father the day you stole my college fund and left your own mother to starve,"" I said, looking down at him without a shred of pity.
Dustin tried to slip out through the sliding glass patio doors, clutching his backpack full of Grandma's silver, but two burly officers intercepted him at the threshold, tackling him to the floor and pinning him down.
""Put him in the cruiser,"" Miller directed her team. She walked over to Gregory, pulling him up by his collar until he was forced to look at the passbook resting safely in her hand. ""Mr. Vance, your offshore accounts in Belize and Cyprus have already been frozen by the Department of Justice. Furthermore, the district attorney is filing additional charges for witness tampering and attempted destruction of estate records. You won't be flying to Florida, and you certainly won't be buying yachts. You’re looking at twenty to thirty years in federal custody.""
Gregory’s eyes were wild with fury and desperation. Spittle flew from his lips as he thrashed against the officer's grip. ""That money is mine! Henry was a fool! Claire was weak! You think you’re smart, Samantha? You’re nothing! You won't last a year managing that estate! You’ll lose it all!""
""I won't lose it, Dad,"" I said, my voice steady and calm. ""Because unlike you, I won't be spending it trying to run away from my own crimes.""
Neighbors had already gathered along the sidewalk as Gregory, Pamela, and Dustin were led out in handcuffs. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the pristine suburban street. Pamela was sobbing into her designer scarf, shielding her face from the neighbors' smartphones, while Dustin cursed at the officers dragging him into the second squad car.
Gregory paused at the edge of the police cruiser. He turned his head, locking his bloodshot eyes onto me one last time. For the first time in my life, I didn't see an intimidating giant who held my future hostage. I saw a pathetic, broke con man whose entire life of lies had finally collapsed into ruins.

""Grandma Beatrice sends her regards,"" I whispered.
The officer pushed his head down, shoved him into the back seat, and slammed the door.
