Chapter 1 - The Cold Steakhouse Table

The heavy glass door swung shut behind Eric and Megan, leaving me alone under the yellow glow of the Arlington parking lot lights.

A sharp October wind sliced through my dress, but the real frost came from the words still ringing in my ears.

Just wait for me.

I didn’t cry.

When your dignity is stripped away in front of valet attendants and strangers, crying feels like an apology you don't owe anyone.

I took a deep, steadying breath, smoothed down the fabric of my emerald silk gown, and walked back inside the steakhouse.

The private dining room fell dead silent the moment I stepped across the threshold.

Eric’s mother, Evelyn, was mid-sip of her Pinot Noir, her painted eyebrows arching with performative worry.

Beside her, my younger sister Maya stood up instantly, reading the stone-cold composure on my face with immediate clarity.

"Where is he, Claire?" Evelyn asked, not bothering to hide the sharp edge in her voice. "Is Megan alright? Her condition is so delicate right now."

"Eric carried Megan to his car and drove her to the hospital," I answered evenly.

My voice didn't waver.

It was flat, clear, and loud enough for the waiter holding the carving knife to pause in place.

"Oh, thank goodness," Evelyn breathed, placing a hand over her pearl necklace as if Eric were a conquering hero. "He’s such a dedicated brother. Noah would be so proud of how he stepped up."

"He was supposed to be stepping up for his fiancée tonight, Evelyn," Maya snapped, her eyes flashing with pure fury.

"Sit down, Maya," Evelyn dismissed without looking at her. "Family comes first. Claire understands that. A wedding can wait; a baby cannot."

I looked at the center of the table.

There sat the white frosted cake, decorated with sugar pearls and the initials E & C piped in gold lettering.

Beside it lay the velvet box Eric had handed me less than an hour ago, containing a diamond ring that suddenly felt like a miniature handcuff.

I walked to my chair, picked up my leather clutch, and slipped the two-carat ring off my left finger.

The metal slid against my skin with effortless ease.

I placed it directly in the center of the white cake, pressing the band deep into the frosting until only the glittering stone caught the chandelier light.

"Claire, what on earth are you doing?" Eric’s father barked, setting down his water goblet with a loud thud. "Don't make a scene over an emergency."

"I’m not making a scene, Mr. Lawson," I said quietly, slinging my purse over my shoulder. "I’m settling the bill."

I pulled out my black corporate card, handed it to the stunned waiter, and authorized payment for the entire party, champagne and all.

"Enjoy the dinner," I told the Lawson family, looking directly into Evelyn’s frozen eyes. "Tell Eric he doesn't need to hurry back."

I took Maya’s arm, turned my back on the untouched steak and the ruined celebration, and walked out into the cold night without looking back.
