Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Table

Julian Vance walked with a subtle, rhythmic limp, the silver tip of his cane tapping against the imported hardwood floor with the precision of a metronome. His hair, once dark brown, was streaked with silver at the temples, but his eyes carried the same piercing, calculating detachment that had once made me feel completely protected—and utterly blind.

""You were dead,"" I said, keeping my hands resting flat on the table, though my fingernails bit into the polished grain. ""The Canadian Coast Guard recovered your vessel’s wreckage. They found your identification badge and your emergency beacon floating in an oil slick sixty miles offshore.""

Julian pulled out an empty chair without asking, sliding into it with effortless arrogance. ""A thirty-thousand-dollar bribe to a maritime coroner buys a very convincing death certificate, Blair. Especially when one owes twenty million dollars to a cartel syndicate in Montreal. I had to disappear. But I couldn't leave without my ultimate prize.""

He gestured toward Preston, who stood trembling beside the security guards, his eyes darting frantically toward Harper.

""Preston didn't propose to your sister because he loved her,"" Julian continued, his voice smooth as silk. ""Harper’s vanity is remarkably easy to manipulate. I needed a blood relative with legal standing to contest the Sterling family trust. And more importantly, I needed someone inside the building who could insert an addendum into your master server before your annual corporate audit tomorrow morning.""

Harper stared at Preston, her expression shifting from panic to sheer horror. ""Preston? What is he talking about? You said we were going to buy the villa in Tuscany! You said you loved me!""

Preston didn't even look at her. ""Shut up, Harper! You were drowning in unpaid dressmaker bills and credit card fraud! If it weren't for Julian, your boutique would have been foreclosed on six months ago!""

""Enough,"" Arthur Keating snapped, slamming his fist onto the table. The crystal glasses jumped. ""Julian Vance, you are a fugitive with active warrants across two maritime provinces. You have no legal standing in this boardroom or in this Commonwealth.""

""That’s where you're mistaken, Arthur,"" Julian sneered, pulling a thin leather folder from the inner pocket of his jacket and sliding it across the table toward me. ""Take a look at page fourteen of the Opeline Founding Charter, Blair. When you incorporated this property under the Vance-Sterling Partnership in 2018, you signed an irrevocable survivorship clause. If either partner re-emerged within ten years of declared legal death, seventy percent of the commercial real estate assets automatically revert to the original capital backer.""

My throat tightened. Ten years ago, when I had nothing, Julian had provided the initial five-hundred-thousand-dollar seed funding to secure the hotel's foundation lease. I had signed dozens of legal documents during those sleepless nights, trusting him with my life while working eighteen-hour days to manage the contractors.

Eleanor scrambled up from the floor, her eyes suddenly blazing with greedy renewed hope. She looked between Julian and me, realizing the tide of power had suddenly shifted.

""Julian!"" Eleanor gasped, grabbing his sleeve with trembling hands. ""You always were a brilliant young man! If you take control of this hotel, you will honor our original arrangement, won't you? We gave you Blair’s original private journals! We gave you the master building schematics from Richard’s old firm!""

I turned my head slowly toward my father. ""You gave him my journals? You gave him my structural designs?""

Richard looked down at his trembling hands, tears spilling freely down his hollow cheeks. ""I didn't know what he was going to do, Blair... He told me he was going to buy out the bank and put the family back on top. We were starving! The bank was taking everything!""

May you like

""You sold me out twice,"" I said, my voice dropping so low the room fell dead silent. ""First to an old shipping baron when I was twenty-two. And then to a ghost who wanted to rob me blind.""

Julian checked his gold watch and smiled. ""The clock is ticking, Blair. Sign the relinquishment document, or the police downstairs will receive an anonymous transmission containing evidence that you acquired this property through laundered Canadian offshore funds. You’ll be in a federal holding cell before midnight, and I will own The Opeline by sunrise.""
