Chapter 6 - The Uncomfortable Homecoming

The medical transport plane touched down at Naval Station Norfolk three days later. Daniel walked down the ramp with a bandaged left forearm and bruised ribs, carrying his kit bag. Waiting at the base of the tarmac were Captain Robert Hayes and Eleanor Hayes, permitted onto the flight line due to Robert’s retired officer status.

My father rushed forward, wrapping his son in a desperate, emotional embrace. ""Daniel! Thank God. When we heard your unit took contact off the coast, we thought... we thought the worst.""

""Are you hurt, baby?"" my mother cried, reaching for his face. ""We were so terrified.""

Daniel gently but firmly pushed his father’s hands away. He stepped back, looking at his parents with a gaze that had aged ten years in seventy-two hours.

""I shouldn't be here,"" Daniel said flatly, his voice hollow.

""What do you mean?"" Robert asked, frowning with genuine concern. ""You survived a combat engagement, son. You’re a hero. The family name—""

""Stop it, Dad!"" Daniel shouted, the sudden anger bursting through his exhaustion, causing several passing sailors to turn their heads. ""Just stop saying 'the family name'! Do you know why I'm standing here? Do you know why I didn't come home in a sealed aluminum box?""

My father hesitated, looking confused. ""The Sixth Fleet launched an extraction chopper—""

""The Sixth Fleet couldn't do a damn thing!"" Daniel snapped, tears finally spilling over his wind-burned cheeks. ""Our communications were dead. The enemy had radar locks on us. We were dead in the water, Dad. And do you know who saved us? It wasn't an admiral. It wasn't a SEAL. It was Samantha.""

Eleanor gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.

""She hacked their entire operational grid from Washington,"" Daniel continued, his voice shaking with raw remorse. ""She routed high-altitude assets to blind the missiles that were targeted at my squad's heads. She talked our rescue chopper down to the exact rock we were hiding behind. While I was cowering behind a boulder, wetting myself and wishing I was back in California, my sister was running the entire theater.""

Robert stood frozen, his mouth slightly open, the breeze fluttering the lapels of his immaculate windbreaker.

""And you know what the worst part is?"" Daniel whispered, stepping right up to his father’s face. ""The last words I said to her in person were telling her that nobody expected her to understand what real courage meant. I told her she was a dropout. And she just saved my life without asking for a single word of thanks.""

Daniel hoisted his kit bag onto his good shoulder and began walking toward the transient barracks, leaving his parents standing entirely alone on the windy, sun-bleached tarmac.
