Chapter 5 - The Man Behind Him

“You got pregnant?”

Naomi reached for the picture.

“Give it back.”

Colin lifted it beyond her reach.

“You actually got pregnant.”

The café seemed to narrow around his voice.

She could hear the grinder behind the counter, the hiss of steamed milk, a woman laughing near the door.

Ordinary sounds.

That was what she would remember later.

How an ordinary morning could keep happening around something terrible.

“Sign the settlement,” Colin said.

“No.”

He placed a packet on the table.

She looked at the first page long enough to see the language releasing him from claims connected to the bakery account and the loan.

Her name waited beneath it.

A familiar trap, neatly formatted.

“My attorney will read anything you want to propose.”

“You don’t need to make this complicated.”

“I’m leaving.”

“We’re finished when I say we’re finished.”

Naomi stood.

“No. We were finished two years ago.”

He rose faster.

His hand closed around her throat and pushed her backward against the brick wall beside the window.

For a second, her mind stopped belonging to the present.

The bakery vanished.

The wedding ring vanished.

The child inside her became a desperate, silent thought.

Then someone shouted from behind the counter.

“Get your hands off her.”

Colin leaned closer.

“You think marrying money changes what you are?”

Naomi clawed at his wrist.

The bell above the door rang.

Luca stood just inside.

Rain covered his coat.

Behind him, Marco was already speaking into a phone.

Luca did not rush blindly forward.

He saw Colin’s hand.

Naomi’s face.

The distance between them.

“Take your hand off my wife.”

Colin turned his head.

Something in Luca’s voice made him pause before recognition arrived.

Then he smiled.

“This is private.”

“No,” Naomi managed.

The word scraped.

Luca’s eyes met hers.

“Naomi. Look at me.”

She did.

“Can you step to your left?”

Colin tightened his grip.

Luca moved.

It happened quickly, without the theatrical violence people later tried to imagine. He caught Colin’s wrist, broke the contact, and placed himself between them.

The café owner came around the counter.

Marco guided Naomi away from the wall, stopping when she flinched.

“May I help you sit?”

She nodded.

Luca did not look back immediately.

He was watching Colin, who seemed to be deciding whether outrage could restore control.

“You have no idea what she’s done,” Colin said.

Luca’s voice remained low.

“I saw what you did.”

Colin glanced at the door.

“The police are coming,” the café owner said.

For the first time, Colin looked frightened.

He pointed toward the table.

“She invited me. We were negotiating.”

Naomi heard herself answer.

“You put your hand on my throat.”

The room quieted.

Luca turned then.

His expression changed when he saw the marks beginning to show.

He approached slowly.

“Can I touch you?”

She held out her hand.

He took it carefully.

Her attorney arrived moments later, breathless and pale.

There were apologies Naomi could barely hear.

Police questions.

Witness names.

The café owner pointing toward the cameras.

Colin became cooperative when cooperation was the only useful thing left.

He called it a misunderstanding.

He said she had panicked.

He said Luca had threatened him.

Naomi watched an officer write without nodding agreement.

When she was asked what happened, she told the story from the beginning.

Not the convenient beginning.

The real one.

The stolen money.

The forged loan.

The calls.

The photograph.

The hand.

Luca remained beside her without answering for her.

When medical help arrived, she resisted for one exhausted second.

“I’m not bleeding.”

The clinician spoke gently.

They wanted to assess her properly.

Her pregnancy mattered.

So did what had happened to her neck.

Luca’s hand tightened around hers.

Then loosened, as though he had reminded himself that fear did not give him permission to hold too hard.

At the hospital, Naomi lay beneath a thin blanket while professionals examined her and arranged the appropriate checks.

She hated the vulnerability of it.

She hated being asked whether she felt safe.

She was grateful someone asked anyway.

When they finally heard the baby’s heartbeat, she began crying so suddenly that Luca stood.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.”

Her face crumpled.

“Everything.”

He sat beside her and pressed his forehead against her hand.

“I should have been there sooner.”

She shook her head.

“You were there.”

“I almost wasn’t.”

“Luca.”

He looked up.

“Don’t make his choices your failure.”

The words stopped him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then a nurse entered carrying a small clear bag.

Inside was the ultrasound picture.

The café owner had found it beneath a chair.

One corner was bent.

Naomi held it against her chest.

May you like

Colin had tried to turn it into something shameful.

It was still the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.
