Chapter 5 - The Terminal Call

At Terminal 2 of San Diego International Airport, the mechanical chime of the gate announcement echoed over the crowds of travelers wheeling carry-on bags toward the skybridge.

""Final boarding call for Flight 1482 with service to Phoenix Sky Harbor. All remaining ticketed passengers should now be on board.""

I stood at the boarding counter, clutching our five boarding passes in my left hand. Zoey was fast asleep against my shoulder, her little face flushed, breathing softly against my neck. Behind me, fifteen-year-old Gaby was quietly checking Paige and Maya’s backpacks, acting with a protective, mature poise that no teenager should ever have to display after watching her father discard her at a courthouse curb.

""Mom,"" Gaby whispered, placing a gentle hand on my arm. ""The gate agent is looking at us. We should go down the jet bridge.""

My phone in my trench coat pocket suddenly began vibrating frantically. Not a single buzz, but an unrelenting, violent series of notifications. When I pulled it out, the screen was illuminated with over twenty missed calls from numbers I had deliberately blocked or ignored just two hours earlier: Raymond, Florence, the Miller estate landline, and three different executives from Pacific Oak Crafting.

Then, Teresa’s name flashed across the screen.

I answered instantly, pressing the phone between my ear and shoulder as I balanced Zoey. ""Teresa? Are you alright? Did Raymond do something to you?""

""Miss Brenda,"" Teresa’s voice came through the line, breathless, triumphant, and ringing with absolute clarity. ""Do not get on that plane.""

I paused at the threshold of the jet bridge. The gate agent smiled politely, holding out her hand for our boarding passes. ""Teresa, what are you talking about? The lease in Phoenix is already signed. My sister is waiting for us with her car. I need to get my girls away from that poisonous family.""

""You don't need to run anywhere, Miss Brenda,"" Teresa said, and in the background, I could hear the hysterical screaming of Florence Miller and the distant, wailing sirens of approaching police cruisers. ""I laid it all out on the lawn. Every single document from the fertility clinic. Raymond’s azoospermia records. The receipts showing he paid Gavin three hundred thousand dollars to father Leo with that Vance woman. Walter knows everything. The guests know everything. The entire city is going to know by morning.""

My breath caught in my throat. For eight years, I had kept Raymond’s deepest, darkest secret locked in my heart out of pity, out of some twisted sense of marital duty that he had systematically weaponized against me and our children. He had convinced his mother that I was the broken one, that my body was incapable of producing the son she craved, all while knowing his own genetics were entirely dormant.

""And Miss Brenda?"" Teresa added, her voice dropping to a fierce, reverent whisper. ""Walter suffered an angina attack five minutes ago when Raymond tried to grab the documents. The paramedics are loading him into an ambulance right now. But before they put the oxygen mask on him, he looked at his corporate attorney, Mr. Harrison, who was at the party. Walter revoked Raymond’s proxy power of attorney on the spot. He told Harrison to call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow at eight in the morning.""

I looked down at Gaby. My brilliant, resilient eldest daughter was looking back at me, her brown eyes wide with an intuitive understanding far beyond her years.

""Mom?"" Gaby asked softly. ""Is it over?""

May you like

I turned slowly away from the jet bridge. I looked at the gate agent, smiled with an icy, calm serenity that I hadn't felt in nearly two decades, and tucked our boarding passes back into my coat pocket.

""Excuse me,"" I told the agent calmly. ""We won't be boarding today. Please offload our luggage.""
