Chapter 8 - Ambush at the Courthouse

The Marion County Courthouse was an imposing marble structure built in the early 1900s, complete with towering stone pillars and broad steps. At 8:45 AM, the sun was shining brightly, illuminating the stream of attorneys and county clerks filing into the building. Among them walked Harold Vance. He looked immaculate in a bespoke charcoal-gray suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase, radiating the unearned arrogance of a man who believed he was always the smartest person in the room.
He walked up the steps with a confident stride, already anticipating the massive multi-million dollar developer payout that was only a signature away. He believed my father was currently languishing in a psychiatric holding cell, helpless and confused.
""Good morning, Uncle Harold,"" my voice sliced through the morning chatter like a razor.
Harold stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, his polished smile instantly faltering when he saw me standing at the top of the steps. Behind me stood two armed United States Marshals and Agent Marcus Ward, all dressed in formal tactical windbreakers bearing bold federal insignia.
""Maya?"" Harold stammered, his eyes darting nervously toward the marshals. ""What... what are you doing here? I thought you were in Chicago.""
""I took some emergency leave,"" I said, walking down three steps toward him, closing the distance until I was looking down at him. ""It turns out there was a violent attack at Dad's house last night. A brutal assault with a baseball bat. I'm sure you haven't heard anything about it, right?""
Harold adjusted his silk tie, his throat working hard to produce a normal voice. ""I... yes, of course! Eric texted me late last night! Terrible tragedy! I was actually just heading inside to file some urgent protective documents to make sure your father's medical needs are taken care of. He's clearly slipping, Maya. It’s heart-wrenching, but as his brother, I have to step up and handle his affairs.""
""You don't need to file anything, Harold,"" I said, gesturing to the briefcase in his hand. ""Because the emergency conservatorship petition inside that leather bag is officially seized as federal evidence.""
Harold’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. ""Now see here, young lady! You may have a fancy federal badge, but you have no jurisdiction over county probate proceedings! I am an officer of this court, and I demand you step aside!""
""Harold Vance,"" Marcus Ward stepped forward, pulling a crisp warrant from his coat, ""you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate conspiracy to commit elder exploitation, and aiding and abetting aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm.""
""This is outrageous! You have no proof!"" Harold shouted, his voice cracking loud enough to turn heads all across the courthouse plaza. Other lawyers and spectators stopped to watch in stunned silence.

""We have Vanessa’s complete confession,"" I said, leaning in close so only he could hear my whisper. ""She traded you out twenty minutes ago to save herself from fifteen years. We have the wire transfer records from your Delaware shell company, the forged deed drafts from your office computer, and your encrypted text messages detailing the developer payout. You're done, Harold. The only estate you'll be managing for the next decade is an eight-by-ten cell.""
The marshals grabbed Harold's arms, twisting them behind his back with practiced efficiency. The sleek leather briefcase fell from his grasp, bursting open on the stone steps to scatter the fraudulent court filings across the pavement. The handcuffs clicked shut with a loud, final snap. Harold hung his head, utterly broken, as he was led down the courthouse steps in front of every colleague he had ever tried to impress.
