Chapter 7 - Chains Of Arrogance

The click of the steel handcuffs locking around Odette Crane’s slender, manicured wrists was the loudest sound in the entire Ashford Tower.

For fifty-eight years, Odette had lived inside a fortress of untouchable privilege. She had stepped over homeless people sleeping on steam vents outside the theater district, curled her lip in disgust at street musicians, and treated restaurant staff like invisible ghosts. Now, the cold metal bit into her skin, binding her hands behind her back like a common shoplifter.

“Take your filthy hands off me!” she screeched, thrashing violently as the officers guided her toward the center aisle. “Do you know who I am? I sit on the board of the Symphony! I host the Mayor’s charity gala! Damian, tell them to unhook me! Tell them this is a family misunderstanding!”

Damian didn't utter a word. He stood with his arm wrapped firmly around his father’s shoulders, watching with impassive eyes.

“Damian!” Odette shrieked, her voice echoing down the executive hallway as the boardroom doors swung wide. Several junior associates, secretaries, and analysts had gathered outside, recording the scene on their smartphones. “Victor, tell him! You owe me! I kept the business running while you were grieving like a coward! You wouldn't even have a company to return to without me!”

Victor looked at her, his steel-blue eyes devoid of anger—only filled with an overwhelming, profound sorrow. “A company built on cruelty is just a gilded cage, Odette. You spent fifteen years guarding an empty vault.”

The officers marched her into the executive elevator. As the polished steel doors began to slide shut, the last glimpse Damian and Victor had of Odette Crane was her mascara running down her flushed cheeks, her chinchilla wrap slipping off her shoulders onto the floor, her screams of fury muffled by the closing doors.

The boardroom fell silent once more.

The board members remained frozen in their seats, terrified that Damian’s wrath would turn toward them next.

Damian turned slowly toward the table. His expression was sharp and commanding. “Gentlemen. Every single person in this room who signed off on Odette’s unaudited ledger transfers between 2011 and 2020 has two choices. Option one: you submit your immediate, uncompensated resignations by 5:00 PM today, forfeit your severance packages to the Morrow-Ashford Foundation, and cooperate fully with the State Attorney’s office.”

He paused, letting the silence crush any remaining defiance.

“Option two: my legal team will file civil RICO suits against each of you individually by tomorrow morning, freezing your personal assets and naming your spouses in the forensic recovery actions. You have until the end of the hour to decide.”

Within ten seconds, three board members were already pulling their fountain pens from their pockets, scrambling to draft handwritten resignations on executive stationery.

Damian didn't wait to watch them crawl. He turned away from the table, taking his father’s arm on one side, while reaching his hand out to Elise on the other.

“Come on,” Damian said softly, a warm, genuine smile finally breaking through his hardened facade. “Let’s go home. The real home.”
