Chapter 3 - The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

“I haven’t applied for a loan,” I told her.

Alexander looked up.

The woman asked me to visit a branch with identification. She would not discuss details over the phone, and I was grateful for that small piece of caution.

We arranged an appointment for Monday morning.

When I ended the call, Bianca stood in the doorway.

“What loan?” Alexander asked.

She said nothing.

That silence was the last thing I carried out of his house.

He offered to drive me home.

“I’d rather take a taxi.”

“Mom, please.”

“I need a little room to think.”

He accepted that, though I could see what it cost him.

I had spent years making his disappointments easier to bear. That afternoon, I let him hold one without help.

At home, my apartment smelled of furniture polish and the soup I had made the day before.

Nothing looked different.

The blue chair still leaned slightly to the left. My husband’s photograph stood beside the window. Sunlight fell across the rug we bought when Alexander started school.

Yet I checked the drawers.

The folder containing my deed and pension documents was there, but the papers sat in the wrong order.

Someone had handled them.

Bianca had offered to organize my filing cabinet in February.

I had thanked her.

I sat on the edge of my bed until the light changed.

Then I called Ruth.

For thirty-seven years we had cleaned offices together. She could tell whether I was crying from the way I said hello.

“I’m coming,” she said.

She arrived with bread, cheese, and a notebook.

“Start at the beginning.”

By midnight, we had written a timeline.

The changed dinner invitation. The missing appointment. The insurance papers. The real estate agent.

On Monday, Ruth accompanied me to the bank.

Alexander waited outside the branch when we arrived.

“I won’t come in unless you want me to.”

His tie was crooked. He looked as though he had slept in his car.

I considered him for a moment.

“Come in. Listen carefully.”

The branch manager, Mrs. Keller, led us into a private office.

A secured loan application had been submitted for seventy-eight thousand euros. My apartment was listed as collateral. The money was intended for a business account associated with Ewald.

The application remained pending because the bank required additional identity verification and supporting documents.

Nothing had been paid.

I held on to that sentence.

Nothing had been paid.

Mrs. Keller showed me a copy of the signed authorization.

It resembled my signature.

But the H was wrong.

My husband used to tease me about that letter. I made it wide enough to shelter the rest of my name.

This one was narrow and careful.

“That isn’t mine.”

Alexander leaned forward.

“Are you certain?”

I looked at him.

He closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry. Of course.”

Mrs. Keller documented my objection and referred the file to the bank’s fraud team. She explained the next steps slowly, checking that I understood each one.

For once, somebody asked what I wanted.

I wanted the application stopped.

I wanted copies.

I wanted the truth recorded somewhere that Bianca could not call a misunderstanding.

Afterward, Alexander stood beside me on the pavement.

“She said she was helping you refinance.”

“I own my apartment outright.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it before.”

He looked away.

The traffic light changed twice before he spoke.

“I wanted my marriage to work so badly that I stopped checking anything that made it look bad.”

There it was.

No excuse about being busy.

No claim that love made him helpless.

Just an ugly truth, finally spoken plainly.

Ruth squeezed my shoulder.

“We have a lawyer to find.”

Alexander nodded.

“I’ll pay.”

“I can pay for my own lawyer,” I said.

He swallowed.

“Then let me help another way.”

I handed him the folder.

“Make copies. Every page.”

That afternoon, the bank emailed the application documents.

Attached was a scan of my identification.

The photograph had been taken from the copy I gave Bianca when she offered to book our family holiday.
