Chapter 6 - The Unfiltered Truth

The audio that blasted through the pristine autumn air of Maple Crest Lane was horrifyingly crisp.
It was the complete, unedited security recording from the kitchen camera Arthur had installed years ago near the smoke detector—a system David and Jessica had completely forgotten existed.
Jessica’s voice echoed across the street, sharp and screeching: “You are so aggressively controlling! No wonder David’s father left you!”
Then my own calm reply: “Jessica, I just want my measuring cups returned to the drawer where I can find them.”
Then the sound of Jessica rushing forward, the sickening sound of her physical disrespect, the wet strike of spit against my face, and the vulgar obscenities she followed it with. And finally, David’s voice, ringing out cold, indifferent, and cruel: “Well, Mom, you kind of brought this consequence on yourself.”
Mrs. Higgins gasped, her hand flying to cover her mouth. The two neighbors beside her took an involuntary step back, looking at Jessica with unmasked revulsion. Jessica’s face went past white straight to an ashen, sickly gray.
""Furthermore,"" I announced, holding up the notarized financial summary Thomas had prepared, ""during their six months of 'caregiving,' David and Jessica paid zero dollars in rent, zero dollars in utilities, had forty-two thousand dollars in personal living expenses funded by my widow’s pension, while secretly amassing nearly fifty thousand dollars in their private investment accounts. They are not victims. They are financial freeloaders and domestic abusers.""
David looked like he wanted the earth to open up and swallow him whole. ""Mom! Turn that off! Shut it off right now!""
""This neighborhood has known me for forty years,"" I said, looking Mrs. Higgins directly in the eyes. ""Arthur and I helped build the community playground. We hosted every block party. If any of you believe that enduring physical assault and emotional extortion in my own home makes me a monster, you are more than welcome to invite David and Jessica to live in your spare bedrooms tonight.""
Mrs. Higgins didn't say a single word. She shot Jessica a look of pure disgust, turned on her heel, and walked briskly down the driveway. The other two neighbors followed without uttering a sound.
Jessica stood on the porch, her breathing ragged, her carefully crafted social media empire crumbling around her ears in less than two minutes.
""You ruined us,"" she whispered, her voice shaking with venomous hatred. ""Everyone in this town knows my business. My clients... my network... you ruined everything!""
May you like
""You ruined yourself the moment you laid hands on me in my kitchen,"" I replied calmly. ""You have eleven days left. I suggest you spend them packing instead of filming.""
I stepped back inside and locked the door behind me, feeling a weight lift from my chest that I hadn't realized I was carrying.
