Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum Returned

The silence on the stone driveway was deafening. Even Derek had stopped thrashing beneath Frank's grip, his cheek pressed flat against the hot metal of the minivan's hood, listening to the icy calculation in my voice.
""Here is the only offer you will ever receive from Audrey Vance,"" I stated, my words ringing clear across the courtyard.
""Option one: The sheriff arrives in seven minutes. I press full criminal charges against Derek for attempted physical assault and trespassing. I press secondary charges against you, Arthur, for attempted assault with a deadly weapon. With Derek’s existing criminal record in Ohio, he will be denied bail and extradited immediately. You will return to Ohio alone, with no money, no son, and an eviction notice waiting on your door.""
My mother sank to her knees on the pavement, sobbing hysterically into her worn hands. ""No, no, God please no! Audrey, have some mercy on your own family!""
""I am showing you the exact amount of mercy you showed me when I was eighteen,"" I continued without missing a beat. ""Now listen to option two.""
Arthur lifted his head, a faint, pathetic spark of hope flickering behind his bloodshot eyes. ""What is it? What do you want?""
""Option two is conditional charity. I will purchase a modest, two-bedroom manufactured home in rural Ohio. The title of that home will remain under an anonymous corporate trust owned by my holding company. You and Mom will be granted a life-estate lease. You will live there rent-free until the day you die. I will establish a medical trust that will pay directly for your insulin and Mom’s arthritis prescriptions. You will never receive a single dollar of cash from me, but you will not starve, and you will not sleep on the street.""
""Thank you... oh God, thank you, Audrey!"" Mom wept, reaching out toward my ankles.
""Don't thank me yet, Mom,"" I said, stepping backward out of her reach. ""Because there is a non-negotiable clause.""
I pointed directly at Derek.
""Derek Vance is legally barred from ever setting foot on that property. If Derek so much as sleeps on the sofa for one night, if his name appears on a piece of mail delivered to that address, or if either of you transfers a single grocery voucher to him, the trust will instantly terminate the lease, and you will be evicted within forty-eight hours.""
Derek let out an enraged roar against the minivan hood. ""You can't do that! Dad, she's trying to separate us! She's trying to destroy our family!""
""Furthermore,"" I continued, ignoring Derek completely, ""Derek Vance will receive exactly zero dollars, zero housing, and zero legal assistance from me. He will walk off this property right now. If he ever attempts to contact my offices, my employees, or my home again, my legal team will file an immediate restraining order and pursue every outstanding civil judgment against him from Ohio. He is completely on his own.""
""Audrey, you can't abandon your brother!"" Arthur choked out, his voice cracking with anguish. ""He's your brother! He won't survive out there without help!""
""I survived,"" I replied instantly. ""I survived when I had nobody. I slept in the front seat of a truck in freezing temperatures. I scrubbed brake drums until my hands bled. If Derek wants to survive, he can finally learn what it means to be a grown man. You spent twenty-four years coddling him and sacrificing me to shield him from his own worthlessness. Now, you have to choose.""
I held out the minivan keys.
""Option one: You keep Derek, you protect him, and all three of you go to jail this morning and sleep under a bridge next week. Option two: You sign the trust agreement, you let me house you and feed you, and you leave Derek to face the world alone.""
Arthur looked from me to his wife, who was staring up at him with wide, terrified eyes. Then he looked at Derek, who was pleading frantically.
""Dad! Don't do it! Tell her to go to hell! We stick together, Dad! Don't let her do this to me!""
Arthur stood paralyzed. For seventy years, he had been the undisputed dictator of his household. He had decided who ate, who spoke, and who was cast out. And now, the very daughter he had discarded like trash was holding his entire existence in the palm of her hand, forcing him to dismantle the golden idol he had spent his life protecting.
The distant wail of a police siren echoed over the hills, growing louder by the second.
May you like
""You have thirty seconds to decide, Arthur,"" I said quietly. ""Sirens are on the county road.""
