Chapter 7 - The Desperate Encounter

Inside the diner, the atmosphere was warm and unpretentious. The clatter of porcelain coffee cups, the sizzle of bacon on the flat-top grill, and the soft hum of classic rock from the jukebox created a sanctuary that no country club could ever replicate.

I took a seat at the corner booth by the window, ordered a black coffee and a plate of corned beef hash, and opened a technical journal on my tablet.

Ten minutes into my meal, a shadow fell across my table.

I looked up, expecting the waitress with a coffee refill.

Instead, standing before me was Preston Vale.

The transformation was staggering. Gone was the immaculate linen suit, the fifty-thousand-dollar Patek Philippe watch, and the arrogant smirk. He was wearing an off-the-rack polo shirt that looked wrinkled, his hair was unwashed, and deep purple bags hung under his bloodshot eyes. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in weeks.

""Marcus,"" he croaked, his voice cracking with humiliation.

I set my fork down deliberately, wiped my mouth with a paper napkin, and looked at him with cool detachment. ""You're trespassing on my peace, Preston.""

""Please... don't call the police,"" Preston whispered, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the booth. ""I went to your headquarters. Your security wouldn't let me past the lobby. I saw your truck parked outside here... I remembered Vanessa mentioning this place once. I’ve been driving around for two hours hoping to find you.""

""What do you want?""

Preston swallowed hard, glancing around as if terrified someone might recognize him. ""I'm ruined, Marcus. Completely destroyed. The bank seized my condo yesterday. The SEC is going through my personal accounts with a fine-tooth comb. My partners voted to refer me to the state prosecutor for embezzlement. If you don't release the debt lien on my firm's assets, I’m going to prison for twenty years.""

""You embezzled investor funds to pay for your luxury lifestyle and impress my wife,"" I said flatly. ""You committed the crime, Preston. I just turned on the lights so everyone could see the theft.""

Preston's eyes filled with desperate tears. He suddenly dropped to one knee right beside the booth, uncaring of the stares from the truck drivers and local fishermen at the counter. ""I'm begging you, Marcus! I was an arrogant fool! I didn't know who you were! If I had known—""

""If you had known I had money, you wouldn't have thrown my keys into the pool,"" I interrupted, cutting through his pathetic groveling. ""You would have kissed my ring just like you kissed Arthur Hughes's. You didn't respect human beings; you only respected dollar signs. You targeted my wife because you thought I was weak, and you threw my father's memory into twelve feet of water just to get a laugh from a room full of shallow frauds.""

""I was stupid! It was a joke!""

""My father worked thirty-two years fixing city buses so I could go to engineering school,"" I said, leaning forward, my voice dropping to a low, razor-sharp whisper. ""Those keys represent a lifetime of honest labor and integrity. You treated them like garbage because you have never worked a day of honest labor in your entire miserable life. You made your bed, Preston. Now you're going to sleep in a six-by-eight cell in it.""

Preston let out a dry, broken sob. ""What about Vanessa? She's living in a cheap motel off Route 9! She's calling me every night crying, begging me to help her, and I can't even afford to buy groceries!""

May you like

""That sounds like a conversation between you and your mistress,"" I said, picking up my coffee cup. ""Now get out of this diner before I have the sheriff escort you out in handcuffs.""

Preston stared at me, realizing there was no crack in the armor, no pity to exploit, and no mercy to be found. He slowly dragged himself up from the floor, his head hanging low in utter defeat, and shuffled out into the cold morning air like a broken ghost.
