Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Open

Thursday passed in a blur of gray autumn fog. At Daniel Price’s corporate headquarters, Melissa spent the day cleaning out her personal desk under the guise of an ""office reorganization,"" discreetly stuffing framed certificates and personal mementos into a canvas tote bag. Across town, Rebecca and I sat in a nondescript sedan parked three blocks away from the regional banking center where Meridian Horizon Holdings’ master escrow account was domiciled.
At 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning, the temperature plummeted. A cold front swept across Massachusetts, bringing biting gusts that stripped the remaining brown leaves from the oaks.
Melissa woke up early, wearing a sharp navy pantsuit. She carried two suitcases down to the front entryway.
""Conference in New York,"" she explained cheerfully over coffee. ""The regional symposium Daniel mentioned. I told you about this two weeks ago, remember? I'll be back Sunday afternoon.""
""Right. The symposium,"" I said, leaning against the kitchen island, holding a mug of black coffee. ""Do you have everything you need?""
""Everything,"" she said. She leaned in, pressed a lingering kiss to my lips, and whispered, ""I love you. Wish me luck with the presentation.""
""Good luck, Melissa. I hope you get everything you deserve today.""
She paused for a fraction of a second, her hand resting on the brass handle of the front door. Something in my tone made her shoulder blades stiffen. But the greed and the sheer momentum of her escape were too strong. She smiled, wheeled her bags out to her sedan, loaded the trunk, and pulled out into the street.
The moment her brake lights disappeared around the corner, I picked up my phone and called Rebecca.
""She’s in transit,"" I said.
""Daniel just left the house,"" Rebecca replied. Her voice was ice-cold. ""He told me he had an emergency client luncheon in Cambridge. He took his leather garment bag. He thinks we're idiots, Mark.""
""Let's meet Arthur Vance at the bank.""
By eleven-thirty, Rebecca and I were sitting in the private executive conference suite of Commonwealth Trust on State Street. Attorney Vance sat beside us, an open laptop displaying the live real-time settlement gateway for the automated clearing house network. Beside him sat Detective Lieutenant Marcus Miller from the State Police Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by two uniformed officers standing quietly near the double oak doors.
""The bonus check cleared Daniel’s corporate account at eleven-fifteen,"" Vance reported, his eyes tracking the scrolling green rows of digital financial ledger transfers. ""Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars after tax withholdings. At eleven-twenty-eight, Daniel accessed the portal from his company laptop.""
We watched the screen. At eleven-thirty-five, an outgoing pending wire transfer appeared on the monitor.
Origin: Daniel Price & Rebecca Price Joint Asset Reserve.
Amount: $450,000.00.
Destination: Meridian Horizon Holdings LLC – Account #***8821.*
Status: PENDING ESCROW CLEARANCE.
Two minutes later, a second wire flickered into life right below it.
Origin: Melissa Miller & Mark Miller Primary Liquidity.
Amount: $72,000.00.
Destination: Meridian Horizon Holdings LLC – Account #***8821.*
Status: PENDING ESCROW CLEARANCE.
""There it is,"" Detective Miller muttered, setting his coffee cup down on the table with a firm plastic click. ""Unauthorized inter-account transfer utilizing a forged digital instrument across county lines. That’s our trigger.""
""Wait until the master transfer batch settles,"" Vance warned calmly. ""Give them the full satisfaction of seeing the 'APPROVED' green icon on their screens. That way, the statutory crime is fully committed and legally irreversible.""
At 12:02 p.m., the status text for both wires shifted from yellow to bright green: COMPLETED.

""Now,"" Vance said.
Detective Miller picked up his department radio. ""Team Two, this is Miller. Execute the warrants at the Hawthorne bistro. Both targets are confirmed on site.""
