Chapter 4 - The Credit Card Trap

The silence that fell over Boardroom A was absolute. Allison’s face drained of every ounce of color, turning a chalky, pale white as her hand dropped limply to her side. Her gaze darted between Arthur Vance and Daniel, her mind desperately trying to reconcile the unpretentious, quiet man who made her morning coffee with the billionaire executive sitting at the apex of the city's largest private holding company. You're... you're the owner? she stammered, her voice shaking violently. Daniel, you told me your family just worked for Mercer Distribution! You let me believe we were living on a middle-class salary for eight years!

I told you my family built Mercer Distribution from the ground up, Daniel replied evenly, his voice resonating through the silent room. You chose to stop listening years ago because you were too busy looking down on honest work. You assumed that because I spent my mornings on the loading docks ensuring our drivers were treated fairly, I didn't own the trucks. You assumed that because I lived within our means in a quiet neighborhood, I had nothing to offer your grand ambitions. Grant, however, was sweating through his tailored shirt, his confidence crumbling as he realized the financial trap closing around him.

Wait a second, this is absurd, Grant blustered, attempting to regain control of the room. Personal relationships aside, Mercer Distribution signed a preliminary intent letter to allocate three million dollars to Apex Venture Strategies! We have signed contracts authorizing a seventy-five thousand dollar retainer advance, signed by Allison as an authorized representative! You can't just void commercial contracts over marital disputes, Mercer! That's bad business, and I'll sue this trust into public ruin before I let you walk away!

Daniel offered a faint, humorless smile and opened the black portfolio in front of him. You are certainly welcome to try, Mr. Sterling. But before you file any lawsuits, you might want to review the authorized signatory parameters of Mercer Global. Daniel slid two crisp white documents across the long table. The corporate credit card Allison used last night to buy your expensive dinner, your penthouse suite, and your vintage champagne was authorized strictly for certified logistics development expenses under section 4B of her contractor agreement. Every dollar spent outside those boundaries constitutes grand larceny under state law.

Arthur stepped forward and handed copies of the itemized receipts directly to Grant. Last night, you and Allison racked up two thousand and twenty-eight dollars at the Halcyon Hotel rooftop and luxury suites, all billed under Mercer corporate accounts without executive authorization. Furthermore, the seventy-five thousand dollar transfer you attempted to trigger this morning was flagged and frozen at midnight by our fraud prevention team. Not a single cent left the Mercer reserve. But the real problem for you, Grant, isn't the frozen transfer. It's what our fraud audit discovered when we cross-referenced your firm's bank records.

Grant's knees visibly buckled. What bank records? he whispered, his arrogant posture shrinking into total defensiveness. You don't have access to Apex's private accounts! That's a federal violation! Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, fixing Grant with a look of quiet authority. Mercer Hospitality doesn't just own hotels, Grant. Mercer Financial provides mezzanine debt financing to commercial lenders across the Midwest. And two months ago, your primary commercial creditor packaged your defaulted loans and sold them directly to our debt portfolio. You didn't come here to partner with Mercer Global. You came here hoping to steal enough capital to hide the fact that your entire company is drowning in millions of dollars of uncollateralized debt.
