Chapter 7 - The Discovery in Court

The preliminary hearing for our emergency asset and fraud proceedings took place in the Maricopa County Superior Court on Friday morning.
Trent showed up with a court-appointed public defender who looked overwhelmed, clutching a flimsy folder. Gloria and Walt sat in the back row of the gallery, looking shrunken, anxious, and terrified of making eye contact with me.
Marcus Vance stood tall before Judge Eleanor Bailey, presenting a meticulously organized two-hundred-page forensic audit.
"Your Honor," Marcus began, his voice echoing clearly through the courtroom. "We are presenting concrete evidence of systemic wire fraud, identity deception, and embezzlement of corporate funds totaling two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars over a thirty-six-month timeline. The defendant, Trent Miller, in active conspiracy with his mother Gloria Miller and a third party named Brooke Vance, deliberately falsified medical emergency claims to extract commercial capital from Lawson Tech Consulting."
Trent’s public defender stood up timidly. "Your Honor, these were inter-spousal gifts during the course of a legal marriage. Under Arizona community property standards—"
"Gifts cannot be procured through fraudulent misrepresentation of non-existent medical conditions, counsel," Judge Bailey cut in sharply, glancing over her reading glasses at the paperwork. "And more importantly, these wires did not originate from personal accounts. They were corporate disbursements drawn against commercial lines of credit under false vendor invoices generated by Mr. Miller."
Trent turned pale. He looked frantically at his lawyer, who was hastily flipping through pages, completely blindsided.
Trent had done something even dumber than stealing: to justify the monthly outgoing wires without triggering my company’s automated bookkeeping flags, he had personally forged vendor invoices, billing Lawson Tech Consulting for "External Facilities Logistics" and signing his father's name.
He hadn't just cheated and lied. He had committed corporate forgery.
"Mr. Miller," Judge Bailey said, her voice dropping into stern finality. "The court hereby orders an immediate continuation of the full asset freeze on all accounts associated with Heritage Nest Holdings and any personal accounts belonging to the defendants. Furthermore, the court finds the marital residence and corporate fleet vehicles to be sole and separate non-marital business assets belonging exclusively to Lawson Tech Consulting."
Trent collapsed back into his chair, staring blankly at the polished wooden desk. In the gallery, Gloria let out a muffled sob, burying her face in her hands.
"Additionally," Judge Bailey continued, looking up at the district attorney’s representative seated near the front, "given the fraudulent vendor documentation submitted into evidence, this court formally refers this docket to the state criminal division for prosecution of commercial fraud."

The gavel slammed down. The sound hit the room like a thunderclap.
Trent sat paralyzed as the bailiff approached him, handing him the formal restraining and asset-stripping order. In less than a week, he had gone from a self-proclaimed desert prince ordering his wife out of her own home to an indicted criminal facing prison time and total financial ruin.
