Chapter 1 - The Red Dot in the Dark

The kitchen had gone so quiet I could hear the hum of the refrigerator. Outside, the dusk deepened into an indigo velvet, and that tiny pinpoint of red by the teak pool lounger gleamed like a drop of fresh blood.

Corbin’s throat moved as he swallowed hard. His face, usually tanned and composed with the smug charm of a man who sailed through life on other people’s hard work, had lost every drop of its color. He looked from the window back to me, his fingers nervously twitching against the seam of his tailored linen trousers.

“You’re bluffing, Claire,” he said, though his voice wavered just enough to betray him. “You bought those fixtures from a commercial catalog three years ago. You told me they were basic motion sensors wired into the municipal landscape grid.”

“I’m a materials and systems engineer, Corbin,” I replied evenly, resting my hands flat against the cold quartz of the kitchen island. “Do you really think I’d install standard retail hardware on a two-acre property that houses proprietary chemical formulas in my home study? They’re multi-channel dual-band optical units. High-definition night vision, optical zoom, and multidirectional noise-canceling microphones.”

Diane gasped softly, taking a hasty step away from the window as if the camera across the yard could somehow see through the reinforced kitchen glass. Her polished maternal facade cracked, revealing the sharp, predatory calculation underneath. She shot a furious look at Walter, who suddenly seemed intensely interested in the tips of his leather loafers.

“Claire, recording people without their explicit consent in a private residence is illegal,” Diane said, her voice rising in defensive indignity. “You can’t just spy on Corbin’s guests. You can’t weaponize surveillance because your marriage is going through a rough patch!”

“My guests?” I laughed, a dry, humorless sound that cut through the room like a scalpel. “Brielle isn't my guest, Diane. She’s a trespasser on my deeded real estate. And in this state, single-party consent applies to home security systems guarding perimeter zones. You know the law quite well, don’t you? Or did your paralegal certificate only cover how to bully people into surrendering their inheritances?”

Corbin lunged forward, slamming both hands down on the island. The force made the wine glasses rattle. “Give me your phone, Claire.”

“No.”

“I said give me the damn phone!” he bellowed, his mask of gentlemanly refinement completely shattered. His eyes were wide, rimmed with red, and wild with panic. “You have no right to hoard private footage of me! If there’s audio on those drives, you’re deleting it right now, or so help me God, I will tear this house apart until I find the server!”

“Try it,” I said without flinching, meeting his crazed glare with cold, unyielding stillness. “Touch a single wall in this house, Corbin, and the silent alarm under this counter will have the sheriff’s department here in four minutes flat. Now, step back from my island.”
