Chapter 3 - The Prince Returns

Caleb arrived at the mansion forty minutes later, his mood buoyant, his swagger unmistakable. He did not knock; he used his spare key to burst through the front double doors, his wet designer loafers squeaking arrogantly across the polished foyer. He tossed his damp cashmere coat onto the antique bench and laughed aloud, the sound echoing through the high ceilings. To Caleb, my summons meant only one thing: Mommy had spent twenty-four hours in terror and was now ready to open the vault to protect her precious boy from the underworld thugs breathing down his neck.
""Mom!"" his voice boomed as he strutted down the hallway toward the formal dining room, completely oblivious to the stillness hanging over the house. ""I knew you’d come around! You always make things so dramatic over a little misunderstanding. I talked to the guys from the syndicate today, and if we wire three million by midnight, they’ll give us an extension on the rest of the—""
He stopped dead in his tracks the second he crossed the dining room threshold.
The sight of the three elder attorneys sitting rigid and silent around the dinner table sucked the smug smile right off his face. Marcus Graves sat to my right, Julian Vance to my left, and Arthur Sterling directly opposite the empty chair reserved for Caleb. The only thing placed before Caleb’s seat was a tall glass of iced water and a single, sealed white document folder embossed with the blue insignia of Graves, Vance & Sterling.
Caleb’s eyes darted frantically between the three men, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. ""What the hell is this? Marcus? Julian? What are you old fossils doing in my dining room at seven at night?""
""Take a seat, Caleb,"" I said quietly from the head of the table. I did not raise my voice, but the chilling authority in my tone caused him to flinch. ""You wanted to talk about your debts. You wanted to discuss your inheritance. These gentlemen are the architects of your father’s empire. If you wish to negotiate your survival, you will do it in their presence.""
Caleb scoffed, attempting to recover his brazen arrogance. He pulled out the heavy mahogany chair, scraping its legs against the floorboards, and dropped into it, leaning back with his arms crossed over his chest. ""I see what this is. A little intervention. You brought Dad’s personal cheerleaders to lecture me about responsibility before you write the check. Fine, Mom. Lecture me all you want. Call me a bad boy. But write the check first, because the men I owe don’t care about Dad’s old speeches. If they don’t see a wire confirmation from Whitmore Logistics tonight, they’re coming here.""
""Whitmore Logistics will not be sending a single penny to your criminal associates, Caleb,"" Marcus Graves stated flatly, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. ""In fact, as of six o’clock this evening, Whitmore Logistics has terminated your employment as Executive Vice President of Business Development. Your office on the forty-second floor has been locked, your security keycard has been deactivated, and two armed marshals are currently supervising the forensic imaging of your work computer.""
Caleb let out a harsh, disbelieving bark of laughter. ""Are you out of your senile mind, Marcus? You can’t fire me! I’m Henry Whitmore’s only son! I’m the majority heir! The moment Dad’s trust vests next month, I own forty percent of the voting shares! I’ll fire all three of you and throw your law firm onto the street!""
Julian Vance calmly opened the folder in front of him and flipped through three plastic-sleeved pages. ""You will own nothing next month, Caleb. Nor will you own anything next year, or in fifty years. Under Section Nine of the irrevocable trust established by your father in 2021, any beneficiary who commits an act of physical violence against the primary trustee forfeits all claims, titles, disbursements, and future equity distributions. Irrevocably. Permanently.""

Caleb’s face paled, the color draining from his cheeks until he looked like a ghost under the crystal chandelier. ""Physical violence? What are you talking about? Mom tripped on the rug yesterday! She had an accident! You can’t prove anything!""
I leaned forward, resting my forearms gently on the edge of the table, and met his panicked stare without blinking. ""The front foyer is covered by two high-definition security cameras Henry installed to protect our home, Caleb. The footage from yesterday afternoon—showing you grabbing my throat, screaming profanities into my face, and slamming me violently against the marble floor before stepping over my body—has already been uploaded to a secure cloud server and delivered to the district attorney’s office.""
