Chapter 5 - The Frozen Accounts

The emergency board meeting took place at seven o'clock on Saturday morning in the top-floor executive conference room of Alden Enterprises. The room was deathly quiet, smelling of cold dark roast coffee and palpable panic.

Victor sat at the head of the long glass table, though the chair felt more like an electric hot seat. The dark circles under his eyes were deep and bruised; he hadn't slept for a single second since the gala. His tailored suit was slightly wrinkled, and his hands trembled intermittently as he reviewed the stacks of spreadsheets spread out before him.

Elise had not returned his calls since two in the morning. When he had driven by her luxury downtown penthouse at dawn, the building doorman informed him that Ms. Ward had departed for O’Hare International Airport with three large suitcases before sunrise.

Across the table sat the seven primary voting members of the board of directors, led by Marcus Sterling, a ruthless seventy-year-old venture capitalist who had personally backed Victor’s initial public offering.

“Victor,” Marcus began, his voice like gravel grinding under a boot. “In my forty years in corporate logistics, I have seen hubris destroy many men. But I have rarely seen someone burn down a three-hundred-million-dollar empire over a twenty-eight-year-old consultant.”

“Marcus, this is an orchestrated smear campaign by my estranged wife!” Victor pleaded, leaning forward and spreading his hands. “Rachel is using aggressive divorce tactics to force a settlement. The Aura Ventures transactions were preliminary venture capital investments under my executive discretion! I can explain every penny!”

“Save it for the grand jury, Victor,” Marcus snapped, tossing a heavy leather-bound folder onto the center of the glass table with a loud bang. “The Department of Justice froze all corporate lines of credit at midnight. Our operating accounts are locked. We can't issue payroll to our twelve hundred truck drivers on Tuesday morning. Our fuel hedging contracts are about to default.”

“We have liquid reserves in the Chicago regional account—”

“Frozen,” Marcus interrupted coldly. “Rachel’s attorney obtained an emergency temporary restraining order freezing every account associated with your social security number and the company's master tax ID. Furthermore, Arthur Vance brought us the original land lease for the Joliet distribution center.”

Victor felt a cold bead of sweat roll down the nape of his neck. “The lease is a formality. Rachel wouldn't actually shut down the warehouse. It would hurt her own marital equity.”

The conference room doors swung open.

Rachel walked in, accompanied by Sarah Bennett and two armed private security guards wearing crisp black uniforms. Rachel was dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal pantsuit, carrying an aluminum briefcase. She looked rested, poised, and utterly in control of the room.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” Rachel said evenly, taking a seat at the empty end of the long conference table, directly opposite Victor.

“Rachel,” Victor stammered, half-rising from his chair. “You have no right to be in a closed executive session! Marcus, have security remove her!”

“Sit down, Victor,” Marcus commanded without looking at him. Marcus then turned toward Rachel with a slight, respectful nod. “Mrs. Alden. Thank you for coming on such short notice.”

Rachel opened her briefcase and slid a single-page document to the center of the table.

“This is a formal Notice of Lease Termination and Immediate Eviction for the Joliet Logistics Hub,” Rachel said, her voice commanding the entire room without raising its volume. “Alden Enterprises has violated Section 14, Paragraph C of the 2011 agreement by failing to disclose affiliated subleasing and allowing unlicensed personal entities to operate on the grounds. As of six o'clock this morning, the locks on the primary gates have been changed. My private security team is in full physical possession of the property.”

A collective gasp swept through the board members.

“Rachel, please!” Victor shouted, panic completely stripping away his dignity. “You’re ruining thousands of innocent employees! You’re destroying everything I worked for!”

“No, Victor,” Rachel said, locking her eyes onto his. “I am protecting the employees you used as collateral for your arrogance. You took the ground I gave you and built a monument to your own vanity. And then you told me to accept your mistress or get thrown out of my own life.”

Rachel turned toward Marcus Sterling. “I have no desire to see twelve hundred drivers lose their livelihoods because of Victor’s reckless crimes. I am prepared to sign an immediate, uninterrupted ninety-day commercial lease agreement directly with the board of directors.”

Marcus leaned forward, his sharp eyes narrowing with intense interest. “Under what conditions, Mrs. Alden?”

Rachel pointed a steady finger directly across the table at her husband.

“Condition one: Victor Alden is immediately stripped of his title as CEO and Chairman, removed from the board of directors, and banned from all company property indefinitely. Condition two: Arthur Vance is appointed interim CEO. And condition three: Victor’s fifty-one percent voting shares are placed in a court-supervised blind trust until our divorce is finalized.”

Marcus Sterling looked at the other board members. Every single one of them raised their hand in unanimous agreement.

“Victor Alden,” Marcus declared, looking at him with utter disgust. “You are officially terminated. Security, escort Mr. Alden off the premises.”
