Chapter 7 - When He Had to Answer

The second hearing drew a larger crowd.

Evelyn noticed none of their faces.

She had learned that public attention could feel enormous while contributing almost nothing useful.

At counsel’s table, Rachel arranged exhibits.

Across the aisle, Adrian spoke quietly with Holloway.

He did not look at Ethan.

The hearing began with questions about the late disclosure.

Evelyn took the stand and admitted she had withheld the drive from Rachel because she was frightened and distrustful.

It was uncomfortable.

It was also true.

Holloway pressed her.

“You decided the rules did not apply to you?”

“No. I made a decision I should not have made.”

“You hoped to ambush your husband.”

“I hoped someone would believe what had happened.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Rachel rose with an objection. The judge ruled, and the questioning continued.

Evelyn did not win every exchange.

She stopped trying to.

She answered what she knew, corrected what she had misstated, and said when she could not remember.

After she stepped down, Priya explained her examination.

Then Celeste testified.

She described the relationship’s duration and identified messages, travel arrangements, and photographs obtained through the formal exchange of evidence.

The video was one part of a larger record now.

That made it less spectacular.

It made it stronger.

Holloway questioned her about the false invoice.

“Yes,” she said.

“You submitted it.”

“Yes.”

“You were paid.”

“Yes.”

“And now you expect this court to reward your honesty?”

“No.”

Celeste’s attorney watched from the gallery.

Celeste kept her eyes on Holloway.

“I expect to answer for what I did. I’m answering your questions.”

The court heard arguments about the recording, its creation, and the significance of Adrian’s knowledge that it was running.

Judge Ellison issued a narrow ruling allowing specified portions for the issues before him.

He did not declare everything on the drive admissible for every purpose.

Rachel had prepared Evelyn for that.

Still, when the clerk brought up the monitor, she felt the same cold pressure beneath her ribs.

This time, Adrian’s own instruction played first.

Leave it running.

Then the conversation about the affair.

Then the discussion of concealing it.

When Adrian finally took the stand, he looked composed.

He admitted the relationship.

He described the language in the recording as frustration, exaggeration, private venting.

Rachel approached with a document.

“Did your wife know the relationship had continued for nearly two years?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her Celeste Ward was solely an art consultant?”

“At the time—”

“Did you tell her that?”

“Yes.”

Rachel moved through his earlier sworn statements.

Dates.

Trips.

Explanations.

Each question was small enough that he could not hide inside a speech.

Then came the packet shown to Ethan.

Adrian’s face changed.

“It was a private family matter.”

“You relied on your wife’s alleged hostility toward the family in your filings, correct?”

Holloway objected.

The judge allowed a limited line of questioning concerning the statements Adrian had placed at issue.

Rachel held up the page containing the fabricated email.

“Did Evelyn Vale send this message?”

Adrian looked toward Ethan.

“No.”

Ethan did not move.

“Did you know that when you showed it to your son?”

A long pause followed.

“Yes.”

Evelyn stared at the edge of the witness stand.

She had thought hearing him admit it would feel satisfying.

Instead, she imagined Ethan reading those words for the first time.

Rachel asked one final question.

“Why?”

Holloway was on his feet before Adrian answered.

The objection was sustained.

Rachel did not argue.

She had what she needed.

Later, Ethan was called to testify about receiving the packet and what Adrian had told him.

He answered briefly.

When asked whether his mother had instructed him to take sides, he said no.

“Then why are you here?” Holloway asked.

Ethan looked at the judge.

“Because I believed something that wasn’t true. I can’t fix that by staying quiet.”

When he stepped down, he passed Adrian without stopping.

Judge Ellison took the outstanding issues under advisement and directed further financial submissions.

There would be no triumphant gavel strike that afternoon.

Outside the courthouse, Evelyn buttoned her coat against the wind.

Ethan stood beside her.

“Was that enough?” he asked.

She looked back at the stone steps.

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

May you like

She took his hand.

“But it was the truth.”
