Chapter 9 - Grant’s Final Reality Check

""Tired?"" Grant hissed, stepping uncomfortably close, oblivious to the dozens of high-profile onlookers watching every second of the interaction. ""You orchestrated an illegal corporate mutiny! You stole my key executives, you weaponized my proprietary software, and you coerced my board into a predatory fire-sale behind my back!""
I smiled, tilting my head slightly. ""I didn't steal a single person, Grant. People don't follow titles; they follow leadership. I built those relationships over fourteen years while you were busy admiring your reflection in business magazine profiles.""
""I made you!"" Grant barked, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled purple. ""I gave you a platform! I gave you the Mercer name! Without my salesmanship, you would still be managing a two-person office supply warehouse on the South Side!""
The room fell into an uncomfortable, horrified quiet. Several guests gasped at the sheer ugliness of his outburst.
""Grant,"" Paige said, stepping forward from my side, her voice clear and completely fearless. ""You didn't make anyone. Evelyn carried this entire company on her back while you were quietly moving corporate funds into offshore shell accounts to defraud your own investors.""
Grant’s eyes widened with sheer terror as he stared at Paige. ""What... what did you say?""
""She’s referring to Apex Holdings, Grant,"" I whispered, stepping closer so that only he and the immediate circle could hear the chilling finality in my words. ""The Cayman accounts. The forged asset appraisals. The private equity restructuring documents Paige handed to me three nights ago.""
Grant stumbled backward as if he had been struck across the face by an invisible fist. His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. The arrogance that had fueled him for years drained out of his posture, leaving behind an empty, shriveled husk of a man.
""You... you wouldn't,"" Grant stammered, his voice losing every shred of its theatrical bravado. ""Evelyn... we’re married. We built a life together. You wouldn't send the federal regulators after me.""
""I didn't have to,"" I replied calmly. ""The board reviewed Paige's documentation at two o'clock this afternoon. In exchange for Vanguard agreeing to absorb Mercer Integrated's outstanding bank obligations, Arthur and the trustees agreed not to press criminal charges on one condition: you sign a total, unconditional surrender of all equity, intellectual property rights, and personal claims against the company.""
Grant shook his head in frantic, desperate denial. ""No... no, that leaves me with nothing. Fourteen years... I walk away with nothing?""
""You walk away with your freedom, Grant,"" I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. ""And the clothes on your back. Tomorrow morning at nine, my divorce attorney will deliver the final settlement papers to your rented apartment. You will sign them without dispute, or the forensic audit files will be delivered directly to the United States Attorney’s Office before noon.""

Grant looked around the grand ballroom. The hundreds of influential peers he had spent his entire life trying to impress were looking at him with pity, contempt, and disgust. There were no friendly smiles left. There were no hands to shake. There was no charm left to save him.
Without a single word, Grant Mercer turned and walked out of the ballroom, his head bowed, his shoulders slumped in utter defeat.
