Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Cold

The raw horror in her voice pierced me deeper than any knife ever could. She wasn't angry. She wasn't a bitter spouse looking for revenge. She was a hunted animal convinced her executioner had finally tracked her down.
""Grace, please... lower the iron. Look at me,"" I pleaded, sinking slowly onto both knees directly onto the frozen floorboards, keeping my hands fully extended. ""I swear on my life, on the soul of our child, I didn't do this. I didn't know.""
""Liar!"" she choked out, tears spilling over her hollow cheeks. ""You knew! You sent her! Vanessa sent me the medical report from your own private server! She told me you couldn't afford a scandal during the public offering! You told her a pregnancy would ruin the valuation!""
The room spun. Vanessa hadn't just intercepted Grace's hospital records—she had actively gaslit her, sending fabricated memos stamped from my secure executive network to make Grace believe I had ordered the chemical abortion.
""Look at this,"" I said slowly, reaching into my inner jacket pocket with deliberate, agonizing slowness so as not to startle her. I pulled out the manila folder Marcus had given me and laid it flat on the wooden floor between us. ""Grace, look at the signatures. Look at the IP address routing.""
She didn't move for a long time. Her breathing came in shallow, ragged gasps, her knuckles turning bone white around the poker. Finally, driven by some desperate thread of curiosity or grief, she crept forward, her eyes never leaving my face, and snatched the folder from the floor.
She backed away to the woodstove and flipped through the pages.
""Vanessa’s father authorized the methotrexate transfer under an off-book clinical trial license,"" I explained, tears finally spilling freely down my own face. ""Vanessa intercepted your calls from the ER while I was in Dubai. I was an arrogant, unfaithful, selfish monster, Grace. I broke our vows. I broke your heart. But I swear before God, I would have burned every skyscraper I owned to the ground before I ever harmed a single hair on your head or touched our baby.""
Grace’s eyes darted across the St. Jude's internal memos. She saw the time stamps. She saw the forged signatures. She saw the digital forensic audit Marcus had run, proving the emails sent to her phone had originated from Vanessa’s personal penthouse suite, not my terminal.
The poker slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the stone hearth.
She slid down the rough stone of the fireplace, collapsing into a heap on the floor, burying her face in her knees as an agonizing, guttural wail ripped from her throat. It was the sound of a woman who had carried the weight of an unimaginable betrayal entirely alone in the dark.
I crawled across the wooden planks, not caring about the splinters tearing through my slacks. I didn't try to pull her into an embrace—I knew I didn't deserve that privilege. I simply sat beside her in the freezing room, my forehead resting against the cold floorboards, weeping with her.
""I called you, Richard,"" she sobbed, rocking back and forth. ""I was bleeding out on the cold floor of our bathroom, and I called you four times. The machine answered. And then Vanessa texted me from your phone... telling me not to be dramatic.""
""I know,"" I choked out. ""I know. And I will spend every remaining breath of my pathetic life paying for it.""
She slowly raised her head, looking at me through swollen, bloodshot eyes. ""You don't understand, Richard. The recording I sent you... you still don't know the whole truth.""
""What truth, Grace? Tell me. Please.""
She reached beneath her sweater and pulled out a small silver chain from around her neck. Hanging from it was a tiny, sealed glass vial containing a drop of dried blood.
""The night they gave me that poison at the clinic,"" Grace whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and awe, ""they told me the pregnancy was terminated. They told me the ultrasound showed total evacuation. But three days ago, before I packed my bags to leave... I took another test.""

My heart stopped beating. ""What?""
""I thought I was just sick from the grief,"" Grace breathed, clutching her lower abdomen with both hands. ""I went to a private community clinic under a fake name in Jersey City. Richard... I was carrying twins.""
