Chapter 7 - The Fragile Thread

The white lights of the emergency room blurred past as hospital orderlies wheeled my gurney into the trauma bay. Vincent tried to push his way inside the examination room, but two nurses firmly held him back.

“Sir, you must remain in the waiting area!” a nurse instructed strictly.

“That’s my wife! That’s my unborn child!” Vincent bellowed, his voice breaking with sheer anguish as the double doors swung shut in his face.

Inside, the medical team worked with rapid efficiency. An ultrasound wand was pressed against my lower abdomen, cool gel sending shivers across my skin. I squeezed my eyes shut, terrified of what the doctor might say, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

“Look at the monitor, Mrs. Moretti,” the obstetrician said gently after a tense, agonizing minute of silence.

I slowly opened my eyes. On the dark screen, a tiny rhythmic flutter was pulsing steadily.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

“The baby is completely fine,” the doctor reassured me, wiping away the gel with a warm towel. “You experienced an acute uterine spasm triggered by extreme emotional distress and an adrenaline spike. However, your cervix is closed, and there is zero internal hemorrhage. But you must understand: high stress at this gestational stage is extremely dangerous. You need absolute, uncompromised bed rest for the next forty-eight hours.”

Relief washed over me so violently that I wept openly, pressing my palms against my face.

An hour later, I was transferred to a private recovery suite on the maternity floor. The room was quiet, softly lit, and filled with the scent of fresh white lilies.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Vincent stood in the threshold, looking entirely dismantled. His shirt was rumpled and stained with rain, his hands were trembling, and his eyes were red and swollen from crying.

“The doctor said... the baby is safe,” he whispered, barely daring to breathe. “May I... may I come in for just one minute, Claire? I’ll leave immediately after.”

I looked at him. The man who had once seemed invincible, who treated everyone around him as chess pieces in his grand corporate game, was now trembling like an autumn leaf.

“Come in, Vincent,” I murmured softly.

He stepped inside with agonizing hesitation, as if he were walking on thin ice. He stopped beside the hospital bed, his eyes dropping to my flat stomach under the white sheets.

“I’m so sorry,” he choked out, sinking slowly onto the wooden chair beside the mattress. He buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders heaving with silent, agonizing sobs. “I brought those vultures to your door. Sophia’s smear campaign... it was all my fault. If I had protected you five years ago the way I should have, you would never have been put through this hell.”

He looked up, his face glistening with tears. “I have already instructed my legal team to release the raw, unedited security footage from the restaurant and the condo contracts to the press. Sophia has been formally indicted for corporate embezzlement and extortion. Her smear campaign is dead in the water. No one will ever question your honor again, Claire.”

I watched him quietly. “And your company, Vincent? What will happen to your reputation?”

A bitter, self-deprecating smile touched his lips. “I don't care about Moretti Group anymore. I resigned from the board permanently an hour ago. I transferred all my personal voting shares into an irrevocable blind trust managed entirely by Eleanor, with you and our baby as the sole lifetime beneficiaries.”

I blinked in astonishment. “You walked away from everything you spent your entire life building?”

“It was never an empire, Claire,” he whispered, reaching out with an unsteady hand, hovering just inches above mine, waiting for permission. “It was a prison. I spent ten years chasing numbers on a screen, thinking that if I became powerful enough, nothing could ever hurt us. In the process, I turned into a monster who destroyed the only woman who loved me when I had nothing.”

I didn't pull my hand away. Slowly, hesitantly, I allowed his rough fingers to gently wrap around mine.

A soft gasp escaped his lips, and he brought my knuckles to his forehead, weeping quietly against my skin.
