Chapter 4 - The Sound of Silence

The morning of my discharge arrived with a cold autumn drizzle sweeping over Manhattan. Victor had brought my favorite cashmere coat and arranged a fleet of private security to shield us from the paparazzi gathered near the hospital entrance. When the nurse wheeled me toward the private exit, Victor offered his arm to help me stand and enter the luxury towncar. I ignored his outstretched hand, gripping the doorframe myself and slowly sliding into the leather seat. The drive back to the penthouse was agonizingly quiet. The city outside moved with its usual relentless pace, but inside the car, the air was suffocating. When the private elevator opened directly into our penthouse, my breath caught in my throat. I couldn’t help it; my eyes involuntarily dropped to the gleaming Italian marble floor in the center of the kitchen. That was where my fingers had scraped against the stone. That was where I had laid trembling, suffocating, begging for a husband who was laughing in another woman's penthouse. Victor noticed my reaction immediately. His voice trembled as he stepped forward. “Elena, I had the entire layout changed… I wanted to sell the place, but Dr. Thorne said familiar surroundings would be better for your recovery. We can move tomorrow if you want. We can leave New York entirely.” I walked past him into the master bedroom, took a deep breath, and finally spoke my first words to him in two weeks. “I want you to move into the guest wing.” Victor flinched as if struck. “Elena, please. Let me take care of you. You can’t be alone right now. What if something happens?” “The last time something happened, Victor, your mistress answered your phone,” I said calmly, each syllable slicing through the quiet room like a blade. “You are the very last person I feel safe with.” Tears streamed down his cheeks, unashamed and unchecked. The powerful titan of Wall Street stood before me, completely stripped of his arrogance, reduced to an agonizing wreck of guilt. “I swear to you on my mother’s soul, Elena, nothing physical happened that night,” he pleaded, his voice breaking. “Selena set a trap with the partnership files, I got careless, I left my phone on the table while I was in the restroom… but none of that excuses my neglect. None of it excuses the months I left you alone. I know that. I know I broke our vows long before that night.” I looked at him with tired eyes, feeling the fragile rhythm of my repaired heart. “Sleep in the guest room, Victor. Or leave this house entirely. Those are your only choices.”
