Chapter 5 - The Hunter Becomes the Prey

Within forty-eight hours of the boardroom confrontation, the financial world went into a frenzy. The headlines on the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg were brutal: MORETTI HOLDINGS RESTRUCTURED: FOUNDER CEDES MAJORITY TECH PATENTS IN ABRUPT DIVORCE SETTLEMENT.

Vincent didn't care about the headlines. He moved out of our historic estate in Medina and into a hotel room four blocks from my private residence. He didn't call me. He didn't text. Lauren had made it clear that any direct harassment would result in an immediate restraining order that would trigger an automatic breach of our software agreement.

Instead, Vincent turned his immense wealth and intelligence toward an entirely different target: Sophia Reynolds.

He didn't just fire her from her consulting role at his affiliated marketing firm; he hired Kroll Associates, the premier forensic investigation agency in the country, to dig into every bank account, every tax return, and every email Sophia had sent over the last five years.

What he found was horrifying.

On a rainy Thursday night, Vincent sat in a private booth at an upscale steakhouse in downtown Bellevue. Sitting across from him was Detective Miller, a retired fraud investigator Vincent had put on a twenty-thousand-dollar weekly retainer.

"It wasn't a coincidence, Mr. Moretti," Miller said, sliding an encrypted flash drive across the linen cloth. "Sophia Reynolds didn't run into you at that charity gala in San Francisco six months ago by chance. She was tipped off by your brother, Marcus."

Vincent froze, his scotch glass suspended halfway to his mouth. "Marcus?"

"Marcus met Sophia three years ago in Las Vegas," Miller explained, flipping open a folder filled with wire transfer slips. "Sophia was drowning in half a million dollars of credit card debt and bad real estate loans in Arizona. Marcus offered to clear her balance on one condition: she had to insert herself into your life, exploit your marital routine, and create a public, irreconcilable split between you and your wife."

Vincent’s chest tightened so violently he could barely draw breath. "Why?"

"Because Marcus knew Claire owned the Aegis software patents," Miller said plainly. "Marcus believed that if Claire caught you cheating, she would divorce you in a fiery rage, liquidate her shares, and cause the company's valuation to plummet. Marcus’s offshore hedge fund had shorted Moretti stock heavily over the last quarter. He was planning to buy back the distressed shares at twenty cents on the dollar, oust you as CEO, and force Claire into a corporate buyout."

Vincent stared at the documents, his mind racing through every dinner, every late night, every staged run-in with Sophia.

The hotel card in his jacket? Sophia had slipped it into his pocket during a cocktail party.

The toll receipt near the couple's resort? Sophia had asked him to drive her to view a property for a company real estate initiative, pretending her car had broken down.

The anniversary dinner? Sophia had called him in tears that afternoon, claiming she had received a death threat from an abusive ex-partner, begging him to meet her at Le Petit Chateaux because it was crowded and safe. And Vincent, arrogant, complacent, and flattering his own ego by playing the savior, had walked right into the trap.

He had thrown away seven years of devotion, trust, and the woman who held his soul—for an orchestrated corporate execution.

"Where is Marcus now?" Vincent asked, his voice dead, devoid of all human warmth.

"He's at his penthouse in Kirkland, celebrating," Miller said. "He thinks the board will vote on Monday to confirm him as managing director."

Vincent slowly set his drink down. The pain that had paralyzed him for days suddenly crystallized into something terrifying: absolute, unadulterated vengeance.

"Call the United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington," Vincent commanded softly. "Tell them Vincent Moretti is ready to hand over full documentation of illegal corporate espionage, insider trading, and securities fraud against Marcus Moretti. And tell them I want Sophia Reynolds arrested before sunrise."
